Spare wheel, M3 to MY question

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
I will soon (hopefully May) trade my Model 3 in for a Model Y.

I have an 18" steel spare wheel for my M3, with a tyre size of 135/80 18.
I understand the tyres on the MY 20" induction wheels are 255/40 20.

I am assuming the hubs/stud PCD, are the same on both cars.

I'm having difficulty (I'm old) working out the rolling diameter of each wheel, as I'm not sure what/how the aspect ratio on the tyres change things. Could some knowledgable person tell me if I could use my 18" M3 spare on my 20" wheeled MY safely or would the rolling diameters be too far apart? Could it do any damage (differential etc) to the car if the rolling diameters are too far apart?

Thanks for that Adopado. It says my spare will be 1.5" (39mm) smaller in rolling diameter and it 'exceeds the recommended lower limit of -3% for the tire downsizing' so presumably I can't use it. I only wanted to use it in an emergency, but It looks like I won't be able to even do that. Anyway, thanks again for your help.

it's 18" but within limits to suit the 19" wheels. I'll probably sell my M3 one and get one of these

There is this as well but i'd want to know the tyre size first

Unfortunately we just don't have enough Model Y drivers around yet who might have given it a try. My thinking is that so long as the car doesn't throw up an error that literally prevents it from being driven I would surprised if there turned out to be an issue when used for a short distance emergency... I couldn't recommend it to anyone else but if I had a Y I would be doing some experimenting!

Yes, the 18" spare will be in limit for the MY 19" Gemini wheels, but unfortunately for me will not be in limit for the 20" Induction wheels on my forthcoming MY.

Usually wheel size alternatives end up having a very similar outside rolling circumference when paired with their different tyre profiles ... so I'm presuming this isn't actually the case for the Y 19/20 inch wheels/tyre combination.

In this case they are identical according to the circumference calculator earlier in the thread. Both 19" and 20" have a tyre circumference of 2236 mm

Yes, sorry, I was wrong on the 19" Gemini wheel. The 19" and 20" wheels have the same rolling diameter and circumference. What I meant to say was that my space saver 18" wheel from my Model 3, (135/80/18) does not appear to be usable on the Model Y, as the rolling diameter is 39mm less and the circumference is 123mm less, than the 20" wheels. The warning on the tyre size calculater web site, above, is 'this tire overall diameter exceeds the recommended lower limit of -3% for the tire downsizing'.
But as Adopado says above, in an emergency it probably would be OK to use (with caution) but would the difference in diameter cause any problem with the cars electronics, differential etc?

I have still not resolved what to buy as a space saver spare for the Geminis on my forthcoming MY LR.
I was just looking at The Wheel Shop site who offer a an 18" space saver for MY with 18" FACTORY FITTED WHEELS!!! Ahhhh!
This?

Anyone know if it will fit in the frunk or under the boot floor storage?
