State based EV road user charge (Overturned 18/10/23)

A positive sign in NSW. OpEd from the Transport Minister.

This ie encouraging stuff, but it needs to be published in The Daily Telegraph and The Australian, not The Guardian.

The LNP fanbase need to read material from their own political tribe that confronts and challenges their world view. Change will be very slow without that!

As surprising as this may sound, you are likely to find that a significant number of people that voted for their liberal candidate own EV’s and solar panels, and probably a few have highly energy efficient homes as well.
Equally a significant number of people that voted for their labor or even independant candidate do none of that. Indeed I know several people who voted for their greens candidate who drive v8’s and have a trendy house with no window shading.
I’m not into green branding people based on how they vote, however I do agree widespread publiction to inform the masses is always a good thing, just dont expect accuracy in reporting from a murdoch publication.

Just got this from VicRoads...

Dear Flatbat,

From 1 July 2021, a new distance-based road-user charge will be introduced by the Victorian Government for all registered zero and low emission vehicles (ZLEVs).

As the operator of vehicle Xxx111, you will be required to participate in this scheme by providing declarations of your vehicle odometer to determine the distance travelled by your vehicle. Registered operators of ZLEV vehicles are eligible for a $100 annual discount on registration. This will be automatically deducted from your annual registration costs.

What happens next?

On 1 July, you’ll be sent a request to declare your vehicle’s current odometer reading by providing a photograph of your dashboard odometer. Any days between 1 July and when you submit your opening reading will be calculated based on your average daily use.

Each time you renew your registration you’ll be asked to provide an updated odometer reading and then be invoiced for your road use.

Failure to comply may result in your vehicle registration being suspended or cancelled, or other penalties.

The easiest way to declare an odometer reading is online via a myVicRoads account, so make sure you sign-up before 1 July.

Alternatively, you can visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to make your declarations.

Why has this charge been introduced?

The Victorian Government is introducing a ZLEV road user charge to ensure all motorists pay their fair share towards the costs of building and maintaining Victoria’s road network.

The charge is designed to ensure ZLEV owners pay a fraction of the motor vehicle‑related taxes and charges that traditional internal combustion engine vehicle owners pay.

The Victorian Government is also investing in the accelerated adoption of zero and low emission vehicles, including new electric-vehicle-charging infrastructure and reforms to enable electric vehicle-ready new buildings, which is made possible by the ZLEV road-user charge.

just wait until they work out that visiting ZLEV’s arent ’contributing’ to the road costs In Victoria.

Congratulations on your new small business with an ACT base of operations and therefore an ACT garaging address. It's unfortunate it'll brand you as a yogi when people see a blue number plate that starts with a Y driving in such far-flung places as Victoria, but I'm sure you can live with that.

Get a EURO stype ACT personalised number plate...solved on the yogi....

i always thought the ACT was happy to register interstate cars? nothing which stops you from giving an interstate postal and garaging adress during registration i think?

literally zero prospects of success in legally disputing the validity
Exactly.. it's been written as a rego fee, which is something the states clearly have power over.

I think part of the issue is many EV drivers are more left leaning so don't want to directly attack the Labor govt.

Best attack has to be direct.
Petrol and diesel fumes are estimated to kill more people annually than actual car accidents.

Why should a polluting Hybrid Camry or 10yo Daihatsu Charade pay less equivalent tax than a full EV.
