Steering column growls when retreating

2021 MYLR, 49,500 miles.

Someone over in the M3 area posted the same thing. When shutting down, steering wheel goes up and in. When retracting, it growls/chatters, as if the vinyl boot area needs lubrication. I'm hesitant to blindly spray silicone or vinyl treatment in the surrounding area.

Until you get it resolved, turn off Easy Entry so the steering wheel won't move when you exit the car. It only does that if you're using an Easy Entry profile that has a different wheel position.

I pulled the cover off mine, extended it all the way out and applied silicone grease (not spray). A thin layer is all it needs.

What cover? Applied silicone grease on what?

This top cover. Once it is off you will see the steering column shaft that extends out. You want to grease that shaft.

Overly cautious, I'm sure,
Is this cover removed by the single bolt directly underneath the cover? Is it a simple clamshell, upper/lower pieces?

No bolts. Clips on. I have removed mine a few times using a plastic pry tool starting closest to the steering wheel.

Got it. Just viewed a "how to remove" on RPM Tesla. Looks simple (famous last words...)

Yay! Finished. The grinding/growling sound seems to have come from the vinyl shroud, so I gave it a nice treatment of Aerospace 303. It worked!
