Supercharger - Lone Pine, CA (LIVE 28 Jan 2015, multiple expansions, 16 V3 stalls)

The Committee voted to approve the project. Next step in the process will be before the Planning Commission. Their next meeting is in November, but there are no guarantees that this project will be on the agenda or not.
They need to get 395 done by December to allow people to get to Mammoth from SoCal for the ski season, and Death Valley. It would make sense, if they need crews, to divert people from doing the I-90 installs in the NW, which are too late for vacation traffic this year and thus have little justification to be finished until after the spring thaw.

I have family that live in Bishop and am looking forward to getting Supercharger support in the Eastern Sierras. Last Christmas I drove my P85+ MS from SF to Bishop. I did a full charge at the Folsom SC and arrived at Harvey's Casino in South Lake Tahoe with 117 miles remaining. I charged for 4hrs 25mins and left Harveys with 187 miles of charge remaining to travel the 173.5 miles to Bishop. I hit zero miles at Crowley Lake with about 25 miles left to go. Lucky it was all down hill and I made it to my destination in Bishop. The last leg of the trip from Harvey's to Bishop was 173.5 mi, 53.2 kWh & 305 Wh/mi. Not a trip I want to do again in the MS unless there is another Supercharger along the route.
My father, brothers and friends who live in Bishop were so impressed with the car they wanted to purchase a MS after driving mine but are held up due to the lack of Superchargers in that area. They frequent Carson City, Las Vegas and the Bay Area and need Superchargers in order to make these trips. Ideally I would like to see Tesla install Superchargers in Beatty, Lee Vining and Topaz Lake. These locations would also help those trying to access Yosemite and Death Valley.

I take it you are driving a 60? Seems like a charge to 235 should be sufficient to make that trip.

I just dont see anything on 395 north of Lone Pine. Maybe Mammoth someday. We will probably see something at South Lake Tahoe sometime next year (probably summer if Truckee is any indication) I will bet California has over 30 superchargers by end of 2015 but they will be located on perimeters of urban areas and in vacation hotspots like Truckee, SLT, Napa, Sonoma county etc.

I agree with this opinion, S-dog!

Tesla seems to want to support its customers where they go most and establish good, longer routes. Although there are many SoCal folks that drive up to Mammoth via 395, most of the NorCal folks go to Tahoe, etc. Is there really much traffic between Tahoe and Mammoth? My guess is, routes like this part of California will get covered in 2016 or beyond.

The Eastern Sierra Nevada and Owens Valley are very popular summer destinations. Hiking and fishing predominate, with the "general" fishing season between the last Saturday in April until, I believe, November 15. Selected areas like the East Walker River are open year 'round, if memory serves. Winter weather and spring heat dictate just how accessible the high country is and how early in the season. Once Ebbets Pass and Sonora Pass open, Bay Area people can bypass Tahoe and reach the Eastern Sierra and Great Basin directly.

According to recent CalTrans traffic counts, peak travel on US395 (likely July) ranges from 11,000 vehicles/day at the Mammoth Mountain Junction down to about 4,700 at the state line near Topaz Lake.

Thrilled to have this one going in! I've been driving Reno to LA / Reno to Las Vegas on this route and it's always a struggle. You either spend 16-18 hours using RV parks at Mammoth and Boulder Creek or take two days and charge overnight from the 14-50 at Ray's Den Motel in Independence. But once Lone Pine is up, both trips will be in the range of 10-11 hours!

What has your experience been with charging at the Mammoth RV park? Have you charged there in Winter? I called last year, and the guy who answered the phone was utterly confused when I inquired about charging my MS. Their website says that the 50 Amp outlets are not available in winter. I was thinking that I could plug in there and take a cab or shuttle back to the slopes, letting my car charge all day. Even at 30 Amps, that should be more than sufficient to allow me to drive around town and get back to Lone Pine.

Would your family be willing to check on progress at the Lone Pine site after the permit is approved by the Planning Commission ?

Permit Approved!

I initially posted that the permit has been approved, and I am editing that post. Really, I posted nothing new. I think it has. The full documentation can be found here, where they state that the review of the application for variance meets all requirements.

What is really cool though are the renderings in the attachment of the pdf. It will be in the southwest corner of the lot, really behind the museum. So, some walk to the nearest food.
In case you have not seen them, here are some screen grabs of that pdf. I want to search this architects website for other Tesla SC renderings!

I am one of those people who visits Death Valley, Mt. Whitney, the Bristlecone pines, and the White Mountains frequently. In fact, it's the main reason why I've kept my Lexus ES 300h. Was in death valley last year when it hit 132.

I'll be very happy to see this station open for my P85D, and I'll be extra happy to see stations open south of Truckee.

You ever go to Saline Valley Hot Springs? That there's my stompin' grounds!
