It is surprising that an autotransformer is used at the supercharger (I am assuming it is main power transformer that is being mentioned). Do you know if this autotransformer used on the Tesla side of the installation, or is it on the Utility side?

The autotransformer is used to raise the voltage if it sags or is low coming into the superchargers to make them able to charge faster (it raises the ac voltage coming in, so that it produces the proper DC voltage after rectification). Many of the sites have them now, they became more necessary as the chargers went to 135kW. Those are the smaller gray boxes that have several pipes coming into/out of them, near the supercharger, and not near the usually green painted transformer. They are right near/next to the big gray AC distribution cabinets, and are generally short in comparison.
