Tesla Says Cybertruck Will Be Built at New Factory in Texas

The Cybertruck will be built in Texas.

Tesla announced the site of its next U.S. factory on Wednesday’s Q2 earnings call. Both Austin and Tulsa were finalists for factory that’s expected to bring 5,000 jobs to the state.

Musk said the factory will be built on a 2,000 acre site on the Colorado River. He said construction began last weekend.

Musk said the factory will be “stunning.” He called the campus an “ecological paradise” that will be open to the public.

Giga Texas will build the Cybertruck and Semi, as well as Model Y and Model 3 vehicles for the eastern U.S.

Musk also gave a shoutout to Tulsa. “I was super impressed and we will strongly consider Tulsa for future expansion.”

The Del Valle Independent School District voted this month to approve incentives to lure the automaker to the area. The proposal gives Tesla property tax incentives of $68 million.

Reminds me of when I was a boy, growing up in Texas in the 1950’s. Every Ford you saw came with this on their rear window. Wonder if Tesla will do likewise?

Model 3s were made in a tent after Musk's epic fail at building an automated assembly line in Fremont.
What's the problem? M3s are available in robust quantity. Ok, so he used a tent - to get around the "fail" which is the local zoning laws that would have delayed production by months/years over bureaucracy & paperwork. Looks like success to me. I'm sure choosing this Texas site addressed such problems quite explicitly; if Tesla ends up using a tent (doubt it) it would be due to speed to production. China factory went up fast. German Gigafactory went up fast.

Where's the "fail"?

Forgive me if I don't display much confidence in Tesla's ability to execute. Model 3s were made in a tent after Musk's epic fail at building an automated assembly line in Fremont. A new vehicle design being built in a new factory = endless QC problems as is the hallmark of Tesla.

But also endless sales and fun. Most Teslas have no problems, so don't know about your "hallmark". I've bought three now, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another of any of the brand. Musk's "epic fail" turned out a ton of cars, both before and after the tent went up. Sure, you wish Tesla operated more like Ford or GM, but most of us don't.

Out of curiosity, is it possible/likely that having a factory in TX will have ANY impact on buying a Tesla in TX? If so, in what ways do you think it could change things for Tesla buyers in TX? It's a broad speculative question: any type of impact this TX factory could have on purchasing a Tesla in the state?

I want to know the same thing. Makes no sense we would "reward" Texas with some kind of quid pro quo.

First, you can buy and pick up your Tesla in Texas. Thousands of people have done so. I bought my two Teslas in Texas with no issues. For the MX, I went to a Tesla gallery, looked it over, had my questions answered and a week later I purchased it on line. Less than two weeks later, I picked it up at the Houston Service Center. Second, the dealership network is very powerful in Texas so I predict no changes. That’s the good news, because you don’t have to deal with a car salesperson or their Manager.

Since when does the Colorado River run anywhere near Texas?
