Vegas Loop will be historically unprecedented.

No transportation system in history has provided direct point-to-point NON-STOP transport between any two of 52 points (50 casinos, the airport and downtown) with ZERO waiting. Please name a subway providing equivalent service.

I am shocked to see contributors on this thread not understand the magnitude of what Boring Co. is achieving. It is nothing like we have ever seen before.
I believe that transportation system that provide point to point non-stop transport with no waiting is called a Taxi. It's inefficient and labor intensive like the Vegas loop until it's autonomous.

Teslas in tunnels beats subways on every single important criterion for evaluating transit architectures. It’s not even close. Loop is the Personal Rapid Transit system of our utopian urban planning dreams and it’s also one of the biggest upcoming TSLA tailwinds in the next 10 years.

Some of the advantages vs trains:
  • 2x-10x higher average speed, especially for journeys greater than ~5 miles where 150 mph top speed can be maintained
  • Point-to-point service; zero intermediate stops and zero need for riders to transfer from one vehicle to another
  • Private vehicles for one party at a time
  • Typically will have zero wait time once scaled (on-demand service)
  • Order of magnitude more maximum rider capacity per dollar than subways, especially in North America
  • One or two orders of magnitude higher station density, and thus shorter distances between station and start and end points
  • Lowest unsubsidized total cost per passenger-mile of any mode of high speed motorized transport of all time
  • Can be economical even for routes with insufficient demand to justify a train line, enabling expansion further out to suburbs, between cities in a region, and in smaller cities and towns
  • Integrates stations directly into existing parking lots and parking garages
  • Incrementally expandable; no need to accurately predict demand years into the future
  • Vehicle fleet can be dynamically routed to serve whichever routes currently have highest demand
  • Does not contribute to spread of communicable disease
  • Lower average energy consumption per passenger-mile (surprisingly)
  • Cars can charge during times when energy is cheap (midday sunshine) whereas trains add to peak electricity demand in morning and late afternoon
  • Less opportunity for crime at stations while waiting
  • 100% privately funded; taxpayer resources used only for planning & permitting and training local first responders; with 5% franchise fee as in Vegas, government actually directly turns a profit on inviting Loop infrastructure construction to their jurisdiction
  • Can be constructed in months instead of decades
  • Vehicles are completely compatible with existing surface road network
  • Rubber tires on pavement can climb steeper slopes than steel train wheels on steel tracks
  • No high-speed train that can strike and kill people leaning off the platform or on the tracks (this is uncommon but sadly does happen)
  • No high-voltage touch and fire ignition hazard
  • Much easier and safer emergency egress conditions and much better fire safety in general
  • Mass-produced vehicles are cheaper to replace and don’t require as much specialized knowledge and tools and parts for maintenance and repairs
  • Multiple tunnels in parallel with many small vehicles eliminates the single point of failure inherent to train design. At most, one party is inconvenienced by a vehicle failure and within a couple minutes at most, another car can come to pick them up and take a different route to the destination.
  • More comfortable ride
  • Cleaner cabin air due to Tesla HEPA filters / Bioweapon Defense Mode. Filter also make Loop resistant to bioterrorism threats.
  • More comfortable cabin temperature because door isn’t opening to outside air every couple minutes
  • More mechanically comfortable ride because Tesla powertrain and suspension on nice smooth pavement is a gentle ride compared to bumpy jerky trains
  • Because of ability for vehicles to climb steeper slopes, stations can be at or near surfaces, eliminating need for expensive stairs/escalators/elevators and associated time needed for riders to travel between station and surface
  • No need for users to research complex train lines and schedules; user just specifies desired destination and rides
  • Can accommodate passengers carrying lots of cargo
  • People with varying levels of physical mobility and urgency can board and exit vehicles at their own pace independently of each other’s travel speed; More accessibility and inclusion and more convenience--everyone wins
  • No chance of catastrophic derailing accidents
  • Much easier to navigate and use for people with blindness
  • Quieter ride which combined with private cabin enables excellent music experience; also audiobooks, podcasts, movies & shows on vehicle screen, etc.
Loop’s end game is basically to use platooning with EV robotaxis (from Tesla most likely) to effectively form dynamic trains joined by software instead of steel hitches to cleverly combine all the advantages of personal car road transport and of trains/busses into one system while deleting all the downsides except for encouraging sedentariness and obesity. However, it will indirectly help even that by killing demand for slow, gridlocked surface car transport with all its annoying turns and red lights and make the surface better for muscle-powered human transit.

The implications of this are massively underappreciated by Tesla bulls in my opinion.

Come to think of it, large cities with subway systems like New York City would benefit big time with a retrofit using existing tunnels, replacing heavy and inefficient trains with Tesla carriers/ platoons, off ramping once in a while at some stations to let long distance vehicles zoom faster to their destinations.

Of course not going to happen anytime soon, inertia and politics (the MTA and NY NJ Port Authority) are such boondoggles for politicians, with loads of taxpayer money to distribute)

Forward Observing

Long story ~ got a nail in drivers side rear of X. Lost lunch at Costco buying four new treads. They would not realign the car. Contacted Tesla service for alignment. Had an appointment right away. Drove to Fife, Washington this morning instead of Seattle, Washington. I assumed since it was Fife, I had assumed it was some outfit contracted to do the alignment. To my total amazement, this was a ground up new Tesla delivery and service location. Even the toilets were new, and flushable. I had to ask when they opened ~ Monday 30May2022. I have been accustomed to grease monkey pits for fossil fuel vehicles forever (Early sixties). Not one pit anywhere! There were roughly fifteen car lifts. The next bay over will be where Xena can get a SPA day. Though, we might stay local.

I think today’s stock rise was solid, based on my pleasurable alignment experience. Yes, my wheels are suffering from some rash.

Cheers

Maybe you have never been to Vegas, but there is often a wait, that can be long, to get a Taxi, and they stop at lots of traffic lights. So not non-stop.
The big difference between surface streets and Boring tunnels -> tunnels don’t need to deal with pedestrian, cross traffic, buildings, or any other surface features.

Even if the only difference were moving all traffic to tunnels it would be vastly more efficient and safe. (Assuming all electric vehicles).

Chicken Genius with a neat graphic (dated but still relevant today) showing what we know we (Elon, Tesla and us TSLA shareholders) are up against:

It's a LOT worse than that: it is the Financial industry itself is dead set against Tesla, has been forever, as they are the majority investors in the oil & gas industry, and are the most at risk of losing their short term revenues from all these legacy established companies.

See this for more details Moderators' Choice: Posts of Particular Merit

This explains why our government agencies (tools of the financial juggernauts who control basically everything in the US, including of course Wall St, the Fed -which is a private company (remember 1913 Jekyll Island ), and our POTUS etc - which is why the anti Tesla (and now especially w/ Twitter) oppo is fierce

My front wheel started to make some squeaking noise 1 month ago when accelerating at low speed. I booked a service on the app. My appointment was yesterday, they had no car so they gave me $130 of Uber credits resetting daily.

Yesterday, had to go pick up some clothes for the kids, Uber ride cost $55 on the way in RAV4 hybrid and $60 on the way back in Chevy Volt with 20 min waiting time for the Uber to come on the way back at 10PM. A woman on the street asked me if I needed help since I was standing outside on the pick up location.

This morning I went to work downtown and the Uber green cancelled 3 times before getting finally a ride for $25. Got a message from my app that my Model Y was ready or pick up at 2PM. When I finished at work I booked a Uber and there was no Uber green and UberX cancelled 2 times so I booked a Uber Premium and got charged a whopping $90 for the 10km ride from downtown Montreal to the Tesla Ferrier store in rush hour traffic.

I have to apologize to everyone here for obliterating $230 of profit for Q2 earnings having raped the Uber credits Tesla gave to me. I am deeply sorry and next time I will take my bicycle and save myself some terrible traffic.

The good news is that I managed to review and complete 3 reports on my laptop being chauffeured in the Uber. Almost vomited the way the Volt driver drive and swirled in the lanes.

The service at the Tesla store was incredible. Never had any negative experience. Even emptied their coffee machine and the 70% cocoa chocolates while on a Google meet conference at the Tesla store. People there are just nice and happy to work at Tesla. What a great company with great employees. Couldn’t help myself and went to speak to the rep who was not busy and placed a reservation for another Cybertruck.

I am probably in a stock price euphoria.

PS.: I was hoping to get a Model 3 or Model Y with Uber Green however I had a RAV4 hybrid and Volt clearly with no battery charge left. At least you feel better paying a surcharge of $0.50 for absolutely nothing.

I wonder if Tesla will make robotaxis available on the Uber app, there seems to be a good thing going on between the two Silicon Valley startups ;)

If they don't have a car for you, tell them you want a rental. They will generally do this for you if you ask. Never settle for the Uber credits because ugh.

Enterprise is now renting EV's too. My last service visit, they put me in a rental Kira Niro EV.
