Texas registration issues and steps to navigate them

As long as you have all the paperwork, the process goes smoothly at the tax office/DMV (one I went to was both which helps). They didn't need to see my car so you don't have to drive the Model S there if they don't deliver it with the proper temp plate.

I contacted Whitney, my Admin rep yesterday and she said I would get a temporary permit of some kind today. Let's hope my Model S is no longer just "eye candy" by sometime this evening!

Are you able to drive to DMV in a separate vehicle and get your plates if it doesn't arrive today? Hope it did though.

Lynn, I am not. But I can confirm that you receive your new black on white plates and registration sticker from the printer at the county tax assessor office.

I ordered my plates from MyPlates.com. They said I needed to bring my Bill of Sale, proof of insurance, registration documents and a hefty check for the Texas taxes to pick up my personalized plates at the Tax Assessor/Collectors office. I called in advance and they do have my plates ready for pick up. If I have problems tomorrow I will let everyone know.

Good luck. I think the Bill of Sale is the final MPVA but if it isn't, bring that as it says how much the tax is.

Anyone: I thought that in Texas you could swap plates from car to car with little to no update to the state... therefore, wouldn't it be easier to order my plates.com for my current car, hold the plates for the MS, then, swap the S plates with the new ones once I get my tax assessor (generic) plates?

David

Sorry about the OT posts Dave... thanks for moving to proper place

That's what I did. I reserved my plates for over 3 years by sticking them on my Jetta. I drove my Jetta to DMV/Tax office and physically brought the plates into the DMV. They transferred them over to my Model S on their system them issued new plates (can be temporary or regular) for my Jetta so I could drive it around before I sold it.

I think Texas has a thing about "visually inspecting 'other' plates" - for example, when I slapped the 1974 plates on my Citroen, I had to bring them in to have them inspected. I believe it is wise to bring your custom plates (whether vanity, or my plates, etc.) with you. The agent can fire them up on the computer and move them to your new vehicle.

I am allergic to vanity plates, so I don't have that issue.

I was also allergic to vanity plates. However, I became incensed during the debacle over Obamacare and ordered plates that read "SESEED" for the Volvo I took delivery of in Sweden. No regrets. I've only had one negative reaction in 2 1/2 years.

I ordered my plates from MyPlates.com and they were delivered to the County Tax Office. I called the Tax Office when they told me they had them and indicated that I wouldn't have the car I was going to put them on for over 6 months so they mailed them to me (!). I'll take them with me when I register my Model S.

Bill of Sale + Certificate of Origin + Proof of Insurance + Application for Registration (signed by Tesla, too) + TX Drivers license + hefty check

SUCCESS!! I just picked up my plates at the County Tax Assessor Office!! Expect avatar soon!

Ditto. Just got back myself. Everything is in the Fed Ex packet. All you provide is insurance, DL, and a bus load of Benjamins.

Thanks. Can you guys check the first post in this thread to double check it?

Comments:
  1. You can register your Model S and get license plates at your County Tax Office once you receive the FedEx the packet with the above items, even if you don't have the Model S. Once you get the Model S and put plates on it, you can drive it to an inspection station for a state inspection.
  2. The application Tesla sends you is an Application for Texas Vehicle Title, form VTR 130-U.
  3. The final MVPA may not show the tax, title and registration fees to be paid these days, but you can figure that 6.25% of the "Subtotal of Taxable Items" (item F on my MVPA) plus $95.25 will be collected by the County Tax Office.

Bill of Sale will not show taxes or registration fees owed since each state varies. My proof of insurance was for the Tesla -- AMICA emailed it to me after I updated my policy to include the new car. Haven't paid yet, but that's how they roll...

Thanks. I updated it to this

Somebody said that the Bill of Sale Tesla sends is actually the final MVPA with "Bill of Sale" stamped on it.

I just got my car today. I've called the product specialist and emailed him and I still don't have the fedex packet containing the "Application for Registration signed by Tesla". Should I have to wait long? I will keep calling, but thought I would ask you guys for the awesome wealth of information you have.
