Major milestone for WA's EV fast charging network

  • Contract awarded to Australian company JET Charge to install 98 EV chargers
  • World's longest continuous EV fast-charging network will link 49 locations around WA
  • First charger to be installed in November, with highway to be completed by 2024
  • Part of the McGowan Government's $43.5 million investment to boost EV infrastructure around WA
Western Australia's EV fast charging network has taken a major step forward with the McGowan Government awarding JET Charge the contract to install 98 EV chargers at 49 locations around the State - creating the world's longest continuously connected electric highway.

Updated details from Horizon: Fast Charging Network - Future-Ready Solutions

Synergy and Horizon Power are pleased to advise that following a tender process the hardware contract has been awarded to JET Charge who will be providing Kempower, Tritium and ChargeMate chargers for installation across the EV network. A tender for the software provider is in progress and the outcome will be advised once the software contract is awarded later this year.

Finnish company Kempower chosen for Australia’s longest EV charging network

The longest electric car charging network in Australia is to feature EV chargers from the Finnish company Kempower, it has been announced.

The 5,300km charging network, which will stretch from Eucla near the South Australian border to Perth and up to Kununurra in the state’s north, forms a key part of the McGowan Labor Government’s $21 million Electric Vehicle Fund which aims to boost EV infrastructure.

The announcement follows the confirmation in August that Jetcharge will install the network. The Melbourne-based company has ordered 42 dual outlet Kempower C-Stations, which can charge one or two vehicles at a time. When charging one vehicle, the maximum charge rate is 150kW. When charging two vehicles, this rate is halved to 75kW.

The Kempower C-Station chargers will be powered by West Australia energy providers Synergy and Horizon. All in all, there will be 49 locations no more than 200km apart once the network is completed.

Now, if we only knew where the ARENA, Ampol and (whatever the Federal Government “150km between each” initiative is called) list , we could add them all for comparison purposes.
I've already done this :) This version from January this year - needs an update. Missing some QESH additional sites, some WA additional sites (Nullarbor, etc), a small number of new NRMA sites and the NSW Government funded sites. The ALP national network doesn't have precise enough data yet.

The pertinent part:

Tritium will supply its award-winning 75kW modular fast charger for this unprecedented charging infrastructure for some of Horizon Power’s regional sites.

That's understandable - these are the parts of the state which are on weak grids, or off-grid, so not enough capacity for the 150 kW units. Presumably the Synergy area (closer to Perth) will have the Kempower setups with multiple load shared stalls.

From the data provided previously, any of the sites which are only 1 DC charger will also have an AC charger. Not the best, particularly in remote areas, but obviously better than no AC charger.

Construction begins on WA EV Network

Construction started this week on the world's longest electric vehicle highway, with the town of Kalbarri to be the first location to receive a charger on the WA EV Network.

Work on the installation of the first charging stations began this week at Kalbarri and Northampton, with construction starting at the Geraldton site next week.

The sites are expected to be operational early next year with works on the remaining locations on Western Australia's main electricity grid, the South West Interconnected System, throughout 2023.

The contract for the installation of the standard and fast chargers will be awarded to several local WA companies over the duration of the project.

Locations have now been confirmed for Manjimup and Walpole as well

From the Shire of Manjimup 17 Nov 2022 minutes:
The locations of the electric vehicle charging stations will be in Johnston Crescent in Manjimup (Management Order to Shire of Manjimup) and in Pioneer Park in Walpole (Lease from Conservation and Land Management Executive Body to Shire of Manjimup).
