I had a note from Jerome in email when my car actually shipped and he indicated that they were having difficulty arranging enough transportation because of the season. I'm sure that the enormous volume of cars emerging from the black hole didn't help matters any either. I think my car took four days from completing production until it was loaded on a transport. I know that it wasn't because they needed more vehicles to fill a truck because at least three full transports worth of cars were backlogged waiting to go to Raleigh. One forum member made a truck a day or two before the rest of us, so they had more than enough cars -- the issue was arranging enough transports.

You're absolutely right! I learned that a bunch of other cars were waiting to be transported to the same service center as mine (Cincinnati), but am happy that my car finally made it on a transport yesterday (production complete 12/16) and is currently in Nevada.
God's speed!

Probably won't make it in time for Christmas, though. :-(

Thanks electrish! I have heard nothing today. I still feel like they will let me know when the delivery begins. I'm trying so hard to be patient! It would be awesome if we got a Xmas eve car. I am really hoping I hear something tomorrow, but not sure. I get emails from Magz Baillio, a delivery orientation specialist in Palo Alto, but I do not have a local DS yet. Looks like that happens once we need to schedule a delivery. Do you have a local DS? I will also keep you posted if I get any info this weekend. I am hopeful that they have enough to get a few to Ohio real soon!
I heard from my DS in California today. I'm out of luck. Not on the way. I finished on 12/17, still sitting in California waiting for a ride to Ohio. I paid on 12/18 and just waiting for a truck to take me to Ohio. I am out of town on 12/28 for a week. So it looks like Im not getting anything until Jan. My paperwork said 12/23, but that didnt happen obviously.

From my experience, "German Engineering" is a long way from infallible. Years ago my wife had 2004-ish Audi A4. That was the biggest lemon we've ever owned. I doubt there was a month that went by without a visit to the shop. We got rid of it as the warranty expired, since we figured that maintaining it would cost more than a buying another non-Audi car. It took us many years to be willing to go back to a German car.

My Friend has an Audi. To open the glove box, you need to push a button on the dash which then electronically opens it (it's not mechanical). The button stopped working, so he cannot open the glove box at all. My point is that its "over-engineered."

I took delivery today. Sadly, no pictures worth sharing just yet, as the car is now in the hands of my detailer getting cleaned up and film installed before I leave for my trip. First impression matches others here:

1/ Much more refined than my P85+. You can tell the car has gone through many refinements over the past 20 months.
2/ Acceleration - it's FAST, but as the driver it didn't scare me, which may actually be a problem. You can hit triple digits (theoretically, of course) very quickly, and the ride is so quiet and smooth you won't realize it. I mostly drove in sport mode, with one launch in insane mode.
3/ On the highway I averaged 335 wH/mile on a 5-mile run at 60-70mph.
4/ The higher resolution display on the instrument cluster is much easier on the eyes.
5/ Noise - I do not think it's any noisier than my P85+. You hear the normal whine on acceleration, but while cruising it seemed fine.
6/ Stereo - yeah, it's still not great. I'll probably do the Reus system again (although they need to figure out how to mount the center tweeter as the mirror area has changed.)

I'll be sure to share pictures and more thoughts/data from my road trip over the next two weeks.

Edit: Forgot to mention, the car was delivered with 28 miles on the odo, and almost a full charge showing 238 rated miles (the techs doing the inspection went for a quick spin.) Version 6.0 (2.0.72) of the software, and an update is already pending.

Andrew
Thanks Andrew, for all your helpful contributions.

So, got P64184 this morning.

Car came with front next-gen seats, but no next gen rear seats. No heated steering wheel options. This was a "black hole" car.

Traded in my P85. Since it was immaculate they gave me ~$3k more than my original trade in estimate... which was already pretty good.

Drove out of the parking lot, stopped in the middle of the street, and launched it. Yep....

So far, I've only seen the power meter at just under 480kW. However I didn't remember to really look at it until after I was already below 80% charge, but, I'll check again tomorrow.

Some first impressions and notes coming from and comparing to my loaded P85:
  • Definitely louder under full acceleration. Can hear the front motor. No balloon squeal though.
    • Not that it is loud compared to any ICE vehicle, but it is noticeably louder than single motor Teslas... No one would classify it as "loud."
  • Cabin is significantly quieter (less road noise) at cruising speeds. This was instantly noticeable. Road noise has been dampened quite a bit since P21636...
  • The alcantara dash is pretty nice.
  • Rear doors definitely open noticeably wider.
  • Frunk is pretty useless now. The pictures do not do the amount of space taken away justice. It is quite small now.
  • Frunk has a single latch instead of two... I found this odd. The latching mechanism appears partially electronic.
    • Frunk is notably more difficult to close as it feels like you have to hold it closed while the electronic latch engages, so a quick press doesn't seem to catch like it used to.
  • Charge port cord locking mechanism is silent...
    • at first I thought I didn't plug it in all the way, but it turns out it is just quieter now. Same with the opener, it is also silent.
  • I did not hear the "ticking issue" even while driving down a smooth road with no other sounds...
  • Radio sounds exactly the same
  • Charge door is... interesting. Cool that it auto closes. Seems less responsive to the cable handle button... could be wrong on that.
  • Next gen front seats are amazing. The most comfortable car seats I've ever sat in. Also took a few pretty sharp turns and they hold you nicely in place.
  • Rear seats I have are newer, but not next gen. The head rests are much higher. They obstruct the rear view substantially more than in my P85...
  • Sun visors are larger and useful now.
  • The rear view mirror plastic housing for the autopilot cam and such is larger... not sure how the dash cam install is going to look.
  • I miss my custom trunk lighting... frunk is useless now so, no point
  • Steering is different. Feels like a cross between "Standard" and "Sport" on my P85, but even more responsive.
  • Ride is a bit rougher and more solid. If I hadn't driven my fiance's with 21's, I would blame them, but it is rougher than hers. Can feel the road imperfections quite a bit... and this is in NJ. The seats help however.
  • Regen is significantly more aggressive at lower speeds. It still maxes out a bit above 60kW, but it will hold higher regen rates down to lower speeds. This seems like expected behavior for a dual motor setup.
  • Has an E-revision battery.
    • I removed the service cover in the frunk and tried to view the top of the pack but it is covered by the motor now.
    • On that note, the front motor assembly looks huge.
    • I did crawl under the car and try to view the pack, and I could not see any new connector. The service guy said he didn't believe there was a front connector.
  • Lane departure warning seems to work properly. It feels like the rumble strips on the side of highways. Pretty interesting. Noticeable to me and my front passenger, but not my rear ones.
  • Speed limit sign reader is interesting...
    • It didn't catch the electronic speed limit signs on the Deleware River bridges.
  • DS said autopilot stuff was slated for January. We'll see.
  • DS said replacement of my rear seat with next gen rear seat would likely be Q2 2015.
  • Steering mode setting is notably absent from settings.
  • Traction control setting is notably absent from settings.
  • I have an air ionizer now...
  • Performance wise
    • I wasn't expecting it to be this much faster than the P85... but it is. It really is notably faster.
    • Off the line is obviously insane.
    • From 70-90 feels quicker also.
    • Traction and handling is improved
    • The feeling of the car pulling through turns as others have noted is entirely accurate.
    • A full throttle launch from 0 without warning to passengers is unsafe. Warn your passengers...
  • Range on the dash at 95% charge was 230 miles. So, should show 242 at 100%. Will find out tomorrow.

More as I get some more miles in. Drove from 30 to 110 so far...

Great report. Very glad you too received your car in 2014. 2014 or 2015--it didn't matter much to you, right? :)

As for the changes in the frunk latching, do you think these changes may prevent incorrect closing from causing the hood to bend? I've read about that, of course, and will be careful to close it correctly myself, but I'm just wondering if these changes may improve that issue from the past.

Thanks!

Yes, there is something of a "grey hole" open now due to shipping capacity constraints. No doubt exacerbated by the upcoming holiday. Per my DS this morning, my car is still sitting in Fremont looking for a truck (production completed last Thurs 12/18). There are 5-6 Florida cars in the spreadsheet in the same status ... so its not a lack of cars to "fill the truck." Hopefully it clears quickly ... DS is still stoically holding to a 2014 delivery date. Hope he is right !

I ordered a P85D metallic grey, 19" wheels, black next generation seats, carbon fiber decor, white headliner, tech package, air suspension, premium sound and ultra high fidelity sound, vin XXFP66161 on November 20th. Entered production on December 12 and completed today.

My Tesla specialist assisted as the motorcar has been almost complete for several days. It was frustrating to see another car going to Tampa as well, started production at the same time, yet completed 5 days earlier. I truly believe Tesla is working hard to make yearend deliveries and maintain a high degree of customer service. Hopefully I will take delivery before December 30th. Does anyone know how long transit and prep would take?

Phew! Almost there! Merry Christmas!

I am really happy for you!
I suffered with you a little through the thread and am glad everything worked out!

Also, many thanks to Andrew for helping us through this wait.

I know it's not over for many of us, so best of luck to everyone on a speedy delivery.
From what we've heard in the brief reviews, it will all be worth it after all!
