Still waiting on the first post from someone who is *owed* Next Generation Seats to actually get them.

While there is absolutely no question I'm anxious to get my front Next Gen seats, I'm so undecided about the back seats now - keep what I have or retrofit the Next Gens...

Per my local SC, it won't be before March-April before we see our NG seats replacements.

This begs the question: why so long, since other P85D's are currently getting NG seats installed at factory? Are they perhaps going through another re-design that will be ready in March-April?

This is what I'm hoping for, Marc.

It would explain the craziness going on with the website, and the fact that currently the Next Generation seats are only available in the front, with a completely different pattern of seat in the back. I don't see Tesla going with that as a long-term plan. I've been hoping that Tesla temporarily altered the website and their design options to remove the current Next Generation back seat in expectation of soon offering a different Next Generation backseat, possibly with a redesigned headrest or center headrest that allows for greater visibility. Of course the question then is, assuming that happens, do those of us who ordered the original Next Generation seats but didn't get them get the old style or the new style. If we're really being delayed until March or April, I would hope it would be the (hypothetical) new style.

It's gonna be a race between getting my rear NextGen seats, carbon fiber center console, CHAdeMO adapter, full autopilot, 155mph top speed, high speed performance upgrade, and Model X. Any guesses as to the winner? ;)

You left out torque sleep.

What's the prize for guessing them in order?

I say...

Torque sleep, CHAdeMO adapter, 155mph top speed, high speed performance upgrade, Next Gen Seats, carbon fiber center console, Model X, full auto pilot.

Torque sleep, 155mph top speed/performance upgrade (together), expanded center console options (maybe wood beats carbon fiber), CHAdeMO, full auto (excluding coming to you when parked), model x

I'm adding a Poll to this thread.

I'm seriously torn between keeping my current, older style back seats and having them replaced with the Next Gen rears. If you ask me today I might say I want them all replaced (fronts + rears). If you ask me tomorrow I might say I only want the fronts replaced.

I'm not that bothered by the fact that the stitching is different on the fronts and rears (that's the way Tesla is selling them now). I'm leaning toward having the flatter folding rears over the new bolstered rears (even though the evidence suggests there's not that much difference in how flat the two different styles of seats fold). Bottom line is I don't have rear seat passengers very often and when I do it's usually for short trips out to lunch or around town.

I imagine I'll make up my mind when Tesla forces me to by calling and asking.

Mike

I just voted Get the Next Gen Fronts + Keep the older rears cause that's how I feel today...

Does the delivery specialist that I worked with the first time around "own" getting the seat swap scheduled etc? The reason I ask is that I got a non answer from my DS when I asked the when question and he references that my service team will reach out to me. It sounds like a "thats not my problem" answer to my question.

"I am awaiting notification on when the next generation seats will be available to be installed in your Model S.

We have created a due bill for the seats and our service team will reach out when they are available to be installed.

Please let me know if you have any remaining questions and I hope you have a great day."

From my discussions with my DS and SC this is generally my impression of how things will go with the seat swaps. The local Service Center will get the seats and then notify us to set up an appointment to get them installed.

I finally got to experience the rear next-gen seats myself, and I have to say, there is very little difference (if any) in folding flat or rear visibility between these and my current "1.5 old-new" rear seats.
The bolstering actually doesn't seem to create an issue for folding since the crest of the seat-back's bolster ends up folding further forward than the crest of the seat-bottom's bolster. I tried to capture this in two of the pictures below.

One thing I did notice though is that the middle seat is pretty narrow at the base. I am 5"11 and 160 lbs - so not wide by any means - but I felt like my hips were touching both seat-bottom's side bolsters, and I could see how this could get annoying on longer trips.
The seat-back bolsters were fine; it didn't feel uncomfortable in the upper back at all, but you'll need someone with seriously narrow hips to feel comfortable in that middle seat. The two "window" seats are fine since there is less bolstering on the outside of those (by the rear doors).

Since it's been nine minutes now since you posted, I think it's probably safe to assume that you just forgot to post the photos (and not that it's just taking you some time.) :)

Oops sorry, looks like they didn't get recovered when I loaded the post again (got lost when I was typing it from my phone).

Here they are again:

Here we go again... time for someone to cancel and re-order so they can get the next-next-gen seats when they become available as they will have (wait for it) CONTRASTING STITCHING :)

Good question - why so long? I doubt there is any imminent redesign.

I find it much more likely it is taking so long because Tesla can barely make/source enough to fill the orders currently on the production line and there is no "excess" to accommodate us early buyers' retrofits while continuing to pump out P85Ds with next generation seats already installed.

I've still heard nothing with respect to when I can expect my seats - anybody else?

I agree with your hypothesis. About 3 weeks ago I had heard from the Ranger working on my car for another issue that they were being shipped already and he would setup a time to replace them; he said the car didn't need to go to the Service Center, he could do them. But since then I haven't heard a peep so I guess he was confused.

In the meantime, I'm having fun with the Insane Mode and not worrying about passengers staining my seats. It's no big deal to me. I'm sure I'll eventually get them and I'll appreciate them all the more! Maybe just in time for 155 mph and 2.8 0-60... or whatever the latest guess is.

Haven't heard anything about when to expect my seats, but according to jpet, there was at least some minimal redesign. I'll try to find the post and come back and edit this one with the reference. The change had to do with the rear seat bolstering and allowing the rear seats to fold flatter.

Here's the post:

I learned something else tonight. Tesla made a design change to the cushioning material in the bolsters. They now use a softer foam in the area where the top and bottom of the next gen seat bolsters meet so that the folding flat issue is no longer an issue. I think most people will be very happy about this improvement and the subsequent return of the next gen seats in the back. Thank you Tesla!

I believe jpet had toured a European Tesla facility that evening.

That's correct Andy. I was told that Tesla mailed out this info to its employees in the field at the end of January.
My P85D was in production for 20 days and I can only come up with the next gen seats being the reason for this long production time.
I had Tesla confirm to me by phone that I would get next gen seats front and back. Did not want to settle for anything less.

If you need to wait a little longer for the next gen seats to be installed, they will only get better. That's how Tesla operates. You will not be disappointed.
