Both IB rebate rates and daily MarkIt short interest data indicate that shorts have been gradually covering. It's possible they are proactively covering in anticipation of the recalls that are about to hit them.

This also means that the stock price would have had a downturn if not for covering. So some weak longs are selling (while shorts are covering). We are indeed in a consolidation mode for a few weeks now.

You're probably right. Look, who's covering now ahead of stuff about to take place or not (SCTY acquisition)? Right, it's "weak" shorts.

Who's selling now? You said it: "weak" longs.

Now, who are these "weak" market participants? Well my friend, they are the traders. They neither believe nor disbelieve in the company - instead they remain agnostic and trade mainly the stock price curve ("all the information is in the curve and volume") but they allow external data to influence their models (or maybe they're actually seeing it happen in the curve?)

Short interest posted today for settlement date 7/15, reflective of the closing price on 7/12 which was $224.65.

Also, looking back at Yonki's post, Fidelity was offering the rates listed below on that day (which I believe were still increasing at that point, before starting to head back down these last few days.) The fact that the rates increased while the total shares shorted dropped supports the institutional recall for SCTY vote theory.

Lend TSLA: 9.75%
Short TSLA: 19.75%, 0 shares available to short

Lend SCTY: 45.0%
Short SCTY: 75.0%, 0 shares available to short

@SBenson - I'm curious how to read this info from IB. Should I read this as the rate one would pay to short the stock, or is that the rate one would receive for lending out their shares? I'm assuming that shorts are paying 17.57% in this screenie, and somebody loaning out their shares at IB would be receiving 1/2 of 17.27%.

Is that correct?

(I'm thinking of moving accounts, and I want to make sure I understand IB vs. Fidelity better)

Thanks!

Re: adiggs -

Below are the SCTY / TSLA % rates that I got paid via IB: (My half of the profit split);

Notes: So far around 90% of my shares are lent on an average day; you do get paid over the weekends.
