Trade in inspection during Tesla delivery

Since early Tesla provide trade in offer without even look at your old car. I'm curious if anyone got your trade in vehicle rejected or trade in offer changed because Tesla inspected your trade in car during new car delivery process and found some issue with the old car, such as a dent or other issues?

On probable reason is since Tesla is not a dealer and doesn't resale they don't care much. Since they are just turning them over to some type of used car mill/auction compony the only thing that matters is the overall average prices and not the individual car.

I received an updated quote a couple weeks after the initial trade in quote. The "updated" quote was several thousand dollars less, and caused me to back out of the trade. They hadn't seen the car. No idea what prompted the change. I sold my car for well in excess of either the first or second quote, but the first quote would have been enough to balance out the hassle of selling it.

Never looked at my car. They walked up to it to make sure it was mine. They never took the vin and never opened the door to look inside.

Up here in the Northeast they send all trades to Mannheim auctions.

They didn’t even look at mine either. I suspect my delivery “specialist” didn’t do them often, and I think he was in a hurry because I signed all the paperwork before he even laid eyes on the trade. I imagine they have a procedure for this, but since they all go to auction I don’t think they care that much.

Carmax offered me $14K for my Lexus. I posted it on Craigslist and sold it within a week for $18K.

The fact that they don’t even bother to look at the car should give you an indication of how low their offer is. I asked the Carmax rep what percentage of people who get a quote end up selling the car to Carmax. He told me it varies by location but in Costa Mesa it is 36%.

"However, if you live in California, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maryland, Montana or Washington, D.C., you'll pay sales tax on the full price of the new vehicle, regardless of your trade-in allowance. "

Not the case here in Quebec where it's 15% sales tax and the dealers know the game very well. Even so getting low balled in trade-in values works out ok in reducing your new car purchase tax liability. I wouldn't of got more for my 2017 Volt selling privately and had all the hassle of selling it and all that it entails.
