It happened to my brother's minivan too. The police said they target tourists with expansive looking camera. Pretty much they hang out at tourist area like Golden State Bridge park or Winchester house around lunch or dinner time. They will follow anyone with expansive looking camera knowing that they will likely drive to a restaurant and not take camera into one. Then just do the smash and grab. My brother lost his full frame $2000 camera.

Some good news this week: the police have apparently nailed the crime ring responsible for these car break-ins, and recovered thousands of stolen laptops before they could be shipped off to Vietnam to be fenced:
