I'm joined many forums over the years and this is by far one of the most ridiculous things I have seen. I have a member on here welcoming me and asking me questions about where I live as he visits here as well, and I cannot even respond back to him in a message he sent me, but once per hour? Even if this is for new joins, it is absurd. I could see restrictions for someone that is new posting new messages at the cyclic rate, but responding to a message shouldn't have these restrictions.

What if someone joined and then spammed all the members with Viagra ads via PM? Seems like a reasonable constraint to me until your post count is a little higher.

As I stated in my post, the message starting limit for a new account I would understand, however; responding to a message from an established member with time limits is pointless. Ooh look at that, I have one more minute until I can respond back to him.

I'd be the restriction is just for a few posts...but make your first few posts good ones! ;)

It is a good post with a relevant point. Thanks for taking the time to post.

For what it's worth, even the restrictions on more senior folks (thousands of posts) tend to bite me too. Later on, it becomes 60 seconds between posts - at least once every other month or so I find myself getting the "you must wait 60 seconds before sending another message. please try again in 25 seconds."

60 minutes is really bad, but that goes away fairly quickly. Plenty of stuff to talk about here. :)

Hmm, that is interesting indeed. Thanks for the info. I have seen on other forums a 60 second wait between searches, and sometimes messages as well. I've never seen the 60 minutes until one can reply to a message though. That's an odd duck for sure.

Even the moderators can't avoid the 60 second thing. It's some sort of annoying software limitation of the platform.

For new members, it's there to limit the damage spammers can cause before they get booted. 60 minutes does sound like a rather long timeout, but we don't want dozens of messages posted in a matter of minutes.

Hi Doug, thanks for responding. I understand the spammer message thing for a new join starting messages, however; it would be nice if it could be modified so that someone could respond to a message sent by an established member. I'm sure my case as a new member doesn't' happen all that often, and I'm probably almost out of the 60 minute wait already, but there may be something that the site owner(s) can change simply by unchecking a box, or maybe the code isn't all that complex and doesn't allow that option. Either way, the info is out there if the owner(s) want to check it out. Thanks again for the response.

The specificity of the message seems high.

"You may only reply to 1 messages every 60 minutes"

It implies there is a specific setting for private message replies.

As Steve said, I can understand limiting the ability of new users to create new threads/messages, but replying to private messages seems like it doesn't need a limit, or at least not such a restrictive one.

Well said John, especially since I was trying to reply to you! Haha.

I dunno. We all went through it and the good it does (thwarting spammers) far outweighs the occasional new member that would like to send multiple posts.

Yes, I understand the difference 'when replying to an established member' - but there's a long list of desired changes to the forum, this one probably doesn't need to go to the top of the list. On the list, sure. Top of list? No.

By the way, welcome to the forum to the OP. Hopefully the rest of your ride here goes a little more smoothly. :)

Hi Bonnie, it is a small issue for sure. I have been lurking here for a while before I decided to join. I actually obtained a lot of info on the brand here before buying which was very helpful. I like to research things to death and the site has been great. As a whole, TMC seems to be a great place and I am glad to be here. Thanks for the welcome :)

A good point here. Perhaps the limit for replying to a private message is a different forum setting for sending a non-reply private message.

If the former limitation was relaxed/removed would that really enables spammers to take advantage? Perhaps I'm not being creative enough tonite to see how it would.

I'm disappointed in you. Usually you have the best ways to spam the server within a set of given constraints.

Wait, did I really join the forum before you and Doug_G?

With more participation your limits are automatically dialed back; I wouldn't be surprised if you no longer have this problem.

I notice the OP has been posting in this thread with less than an hour between posts. Maybe there is some hidden setting in the reply to private messages that is different from public posts? Though I would think a timing limitation would apply to both equally if it's going to apply to private messages at all.

The limitation may go away after 10 posts or something low like that. I have only been here a few months and I didn't know there was a limit on new members posting. I guess I didn't hit it when my post count was under the threshold?
