Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Remember that scene in "Hunt for Red October" where the Russian sub took the safety device off the torpedo so that it could be used in close proximity? That's kind of like what is happening ...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I want to thank you for this suggestion. I just suggested to my son that I would guarantee up to one share a month if he put it in a separate account. As a young man about 30, the pull to day trade is strong. And while he can still do that, I hope he will see the value of buy and hold for at...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Austin has massive bedrock. It makes building above ground easy and below ground difficult. This is why there are so few buried power lines. I am not saying The Boring Company couldn't tunnel. It would just be more challenging and undoubtedly slower.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

If naked short selling is common, why is this not the subject of a class action lawsuit? There has to be some sort of penalty for this behavior. The aggrieved party is anyone who has their shares eligible for borrowing. I would think naked shorts not only deny someone the cost of share...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Huh? The original author was discussing naked shorts which is illegal in most circumstances. This is the creation of a supply of shares out of thin air (selling without securing borrowing someone else's shares). The rise you point to is explained by excess demand without sufficient supply. In...

    Autopilot Functionality Suggestion

I'm not saying there are not situations where the dead center of the lane is not the best place to be. But there are situations when the center is not the safest place. Since computers are not controlling all cars/trucks on the road, there is uncertainty. Space in the lane represents the margin...

    Autopilot Functionality Suggestion

According to wikipedia, "Autopilot for HW2 cars came in February 2017. It included adaptive cruise control, autosteer on divided highways, autosteer on 'local roads’ up to a speed of 35 mph or a specified number of mph over the local speed limit to a maximum of 45 mph." So... why re-train...

    Autopilot Functionality Suggestion

Suggestion: context aware lane tracking I can see an argument for robotically centered driving but it is not the way people drive. In a two lane undivided highway, we naturally put a little extra room near the traffic heading at you from the other direction. When we pass a truck, we naturally...

How about no. Let others deal with endless logistics details. If it is not shipping for Tesla, why bother. There are plenty of problems to work on.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I suppose, more to the point, the trucking company wouldn't have to declare a profit (and pay taxes) until it sells the shares.
  11. H

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I'll hazard a guess... If you buy shares on the open market, your purchase time is set at that moment. But if you barter for shares, it might look like the stock is a long term capital gain from the purchase time for the carrier/trucks. I don't know if such things are possible/legal. Its...

    General Discussion: 2018 Investor Roundtable

Any car manufacturer can make a lot of cars. To be competing with others on car manufacturing speed is to be playing the game on their turf. Production numbers are good to have and all, but kind of miss the point. The point was about proving profitability for the quarter. After that goal is...

    General Discussion: 2018 Investor Roundtable

I've had my Model 3 for 2 months. I've given maybe 8 test drives to friends. At least one is ordering and another is trying to figure out how to pay for it. Some others already have an order in but have never seen or driven it in person. As these puppies spread across the country there will be...

    General Discussion: 2018 Investor Roundtable

It is not either/or. By making shareholder profit, the entire auto industry has to take notice. If Tesla was not a financial success, nothing would change and Tesla would eventually run out of money. The only way to make a real dent is to show the world that sustainable is the only way of the...

    2017 Investor Roundtable:General Discussion

I speculate that they will show off a tweak to autopilot that amounts to "platoon" functionality. Coast-to-coast no human touch the controls could be a car that is following a car with a human driver.
  18. H

    Tesla Semi

So it seems "platooning" is likely to be, at least, part of the Tesla Semi story. Okay, next question. Why does the platoon leader have to be anything special? It could be any car with the right software, as the followers will all be self powered. And also think about the dynamics of a...

    Tesla Semi

Geez, I don't know. Maybe its a bed of rollers able to power the load/unload. And maybe it doesn't tilt. An empty bed backs up to a loaded one, so that they are nearly touching. Then the rollers convey the container from one flat bead to the other w/o human intervention. In the grand scope of...

    Tesla Semi

I was referring to the container automatically sliding on and clamping or sliding off (not packing or unpacking the contents)
  21. H

    Tesla Semi

Let me try this Tesla Semi speculation one more time. My guess is that the Tesla Semi will be: *a "tractor" that is not actually attached to the trailer. *a trailer is merely a skateboard (battery and wheels) that follows the "tractor" via modified autopilot *a trailer can follow another...

    Tesla Semi

A simple shipping container costs less than $2K http://kkcontainer.com/how-much-does-shipping-container-cost/ whereas tractors cost a couple of hundred thousand. A skateboard could recharge while the container is being loaded/unloaded. Or if the container is to stay for weeks, no problem, put a...
  23. H

    Tesla Semi

The Tesla Semi project is NOT about the cab, it is autopilot repackaged. Sure there will be a Cab. Sure there will be a trailer which is a skateboard that can carry a standard shipping container. And they can likely go long distances w/o recharge (1mWh anyone?). My guess is that the trailer...
  24. H

    Tesla Semi

Lets take this thought experiment further, maybe the cab will have its own battery capable of going 3K miles. That way no physical tether is needed. Instead the tether is merely a wireless protocol. This would allow other cars to join a convoy going across country. This goes beyond trucking...
  25. H

    Tesla Semi

Okay here is my wacky speculation as to the Tesla Semi. (based on absolutely nothing) 1) The Semi will have 3 components, not 2. A container (no wheels), which is a standard shipping container. The skateboard (battery, powered wheels, and covering for the container for aerodynamics). The cab...

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2016

I hate to say it, but if people think a squeeze is going to happen; it probably won't. This is more than contrary thinking. If shorts sense they may be caught with their pants down, they will exit. As the moment approaches, more and more do so. The squeeze scenario only occurs if they are...

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2016

autopilot: sure. But true driverless is harder than 2 years R&D in my opinion. For example, the streets in Georgetown (in Washington DC) are too narrow for the parked cars and two lanes. As a result, there is this odd dance that occurs when you face another car from the opposite direction...

Tesla customer service miss & bad PR

"Tesla turns out to be the new Verizon, hey, who knew?" I heard this listening to a popular geek podcast, "This Week in Google". Leo repeated a bad customer service experience as he was trying to configure his Model X. You can find it at time index of 44:30 of expisode 336 This Week in...

In 2 Years "Summon" Will Drive Model S WHEREVER YOU ARE!

Yup. The most realistic use of self-parking/summoning is optimizing utilization of Superchargers. Go to dinner and don't worry about hogging the space for others. Your car will pull up, charge, disconnect and park nearby when done. I bet we see a first snake Supercharger and demonstration of...

Is Auto Pilot 1.0 fleet learning really a reality?

I know a little something about AI, and am not yet an owner (but heavily invested). But it seems to me that it doesn't have to be an either/or. Sure I would expect Tesla to get feedback as to the conditions under which a human had to take over (which would lead to better future updates)...

A 10 minute Survey of Tesla Model S Owners

You ask if you own a Model S, my answer is no. Then there is a screen that requires you fill in delivery date, etc. I've done quite well investing in TSLA though my retirement account (no access to profits). I am sure I will get a Tesla car at some point. But apparently your survey is not...

Apple: Rumors of EV to Challenge Tesla or Buying Tesla

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2014

They may be reinforced to act similarly as they move the market (to some degree). Like a swarm of birds, one heads in a direction (because of new or old information) then they all do. And they are right to do so as they "guessed" the movement of the market. At some point, one starts in a new...

    Long-term TSLA Investment Strategy

To each his/her own. The same sentiment has been relayed at $30/share, $50, $90, $120, $150, etc. The real question is about the future of Tesla. I would argue the stock is less risky now than it was back two years ago. Elon & team have proven that they can execute the vision. Of course...

    Long-term TSLA Investment Strategy

That is a common sentiment. But I think the real reason everyone suggests diversification is that to suggest anything else is to beg the question, "which stock". As for being all-in, you stop being so worried when your strategy is yielding 2x or so. (Currently at about 11x return in TSLA)...

Battery usage due to two motors

My understanding is that Tesla intends to have different gear ratios on each motor. This would allow them to favor power to one pair of wheels at lower speeds and the other at higher. Potentially this could be more efficient and allow a higher top speed.

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2014

Lets see now, an unsolicited, poor, rating of a highly successful bond offering. It looks to me like a marketshare protection move. They can't have those unrated bonds out there starting a trend. It kind of reminds me of the Real Estate broker who bad mouths the FSBO up the street.

White House Petition Requesting Competitive Bidding for Military Satellite Launches

I think we are burnt out after the original petition to have Tesla be allowed to sell directly in all 50 states. The number of signatures didn't matter. It seems pretty clear, the petition site is NOT about raising issues. It is about gathering email addresses for political SPAM.

    Tesla prediction revisited

Two years ago (before I found Teslamotorsclub) I frequented the Yahoo message boards. I no longer have the energy to fight the trolls there, so I move the thread here. I would like to look back and see how much is still relevant today. First, my original post as of Feb 24, 2012...

Short term vs. Long term investing

I started this thread a bit dismayed at the glamor around short term trading. I suspect this competition suggestion has the potential to be all too educational, in this regard. It is true that there (likely) are those who understand and can manage the short term risk/reward. I think far more...

Short term vs. Long term investing

I would agree that I don't have the skill set and risk/reward tolerance for short term investing. And its obviously profitable if you can be on the correct side of a trade. But what insight does one have that makes one think that they have a better than 50/50 chance of being on the correct...

Short term vs. Long term investing

I am a software developer from a large, lower middle class family. All that I have I made myself. All investments are from my self-directed IRA. Short term vs. Long term investing

There seems to be a lot of chatter about options, call spreads and such. While such conversation generates interest, I seriously doubt it competes with "Buy and Hold". I am all-in on Tesla and it is a ten bagger for me. But if you read the forums, you would get the impression that I am a...
