Well, that was it! Duh. Can't believe I didn't think of this. I rarely turn on the DOLBY so didn't think to check that. Alas, with DOLBY off, the rear speakers sound as they should.

Exactly. If Tesla doesn't want to develop an SDK for their infotainment system, they should open it up to CarPlay/AndroidAuto and let those "app experts" do the heavy lifting.

This is the exact reason that Android Car and CarPlay should be offered as options in the Tesla. Let the smartphone folks focus on doing the app writing. That giant touchscreen should to able to serve as a display for (car appropriate) apps that are already on our phones.

So, whatever happened to the promised in-car apps? While there have been some nice (relatively minor) UI tweaks, no new functionality has been introduced to that giant touch screen. Seems like such a wasted opportunity.
