Why are TACC, AP (and ?FSD) so bad?

On a recent road trip, I met a guy with a BMW i4 at an EA charger. We were comparing notes on our cars. I asked him if he knew what phantom braking was. He was like, "well I've heard of the concept I guess." I told him about my experience with PB while using TACC and he said "Oh I just turn...

2017 Model S scroll wheels are slow to respond / intermittent

I tried the 4-finger reboot a couple of times and it did not help. Then I got mobile service to come out and replace the switch assemblies (includes scroll wheels and the buttons surrounding them). My service guy said that they've had issues in dry climates due to static electricity, and he...

Washington Post: How Elon Musk knocked Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ off course

Here's what was sold in 2016 for FSD. But I read it again and it does not say "We promise." Also from Tesla's blog post in 2016... but again, they did not pinky swear: So, yeah, I guess if you actually believed any of that, it's on you. Source: Tesla announces all production cars now have...

Washington Post: How Elon Musk knocked Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ off course

Well the article did not only deal with FSD, even though FSD is in the title. Disabling radar affects autopilot (TACC) as well as FSD. If the strategy is to ruin Autopilot (TACC) because it makes FSD better (which I'm skeptical of), that's not a good strategy. I find it hard to believe that a...

Washington Post: How Elon Musk knocked Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ off course

It blows my mind all the people defending the removal of radar, saying this was just a hit-piece, etc. Since the removal of radar, I cannot even use cruise control if the sun is in front of me, lower than the roofline. It just says it's lowering the speed due to "poor visibility", even though...

Constant cracking sound in speakers; sporadic loss of audio

I have my car set to alert me if I'm going more than 10mph over the speed limit. The other day it was chiming at me to warn me, and even this chime was the victim of the audio loss! Half-way through the chime, it paused for half a second, then continued with the rest of the chime. So lame!

Poor Model Y Tesla Vison Experience

Well, I can no longer say that I don't experience PB when there is a car in front of me. Had my worst PB event yet yesterday afternoon, driving home from a ski trip. I was in a line of cars on CO Hwy 9. My daughter was having a pleasant nap and I had TACC engaged. Bam! Hard braking while...

Poor Model Y Tesla Vison Experience

That, in a nutshell, is my general overall complaint with TACC. It tries to do so much, that it cannot consistently get the basics correct. Most of the time, yes. To me, that's not good enough.

Poor Model Y Tesla Vison Experience

My expectations are simply that the car doesn't stab the breaks at unexpected times. Yes, when it happens, i apply the throttle and take over. Nothing else I can do. By then my passengers (and myself) have already been freaked out and annoyed. I suspect we are just having different levels of...

Poor Model Y Tesla Vison Experience

Yes, this matches my experience. PB mostly (perhaps always) happens when there is no one else near me, or at least not in front of me. I believe your assessment is spot on.

Poor Model Y Tesla Vison Experience

Not sure if that's a serious question or not. I live in Colorado Springs. Majority of PB events have been outside of town. I 25, US 24 west of town, I 70 west of Denver. TACC slowing down below speed limit due to low sun in town.

Poor Model Y Tesla Vison Experience

Autopilot, specifically TACC, increases the stress of driving for me on a somewhat regular basis. It has hit the brakes hard for no reason (phantom braking) on rural 2-lane highways. It has also done it on the Interstate. Curvy ones, straight ones. There is no situation where I fully trust it...

Why are TACC, AP (and ?FSD) so bad?

I actually agree with both of you. TBH the problem would go away if they just wouldn't release stupid updates. Like taking my buttons off my bottom row, and disabling radar, and messing with my voice commands, and breaking my music player. I realize it's subjective to say what's a stupid...

Why are TACC, AP (and ?FSD) so bad?

But it shouldn't matter. I should not be forced to install non-safety-related updates (such as the one that took my seat heater controls, etc, off my bottom row, or the one that made it so that you can't listen to music without random gaps, or the one that disabled radar). If it is a...

Why are TACC, AP (and ?FSD) so bad?

I think that's what recalls are for. Nobody can force you to take your car in (or push the update button) for a recall, but they officially notify you, and I believe you're not allowed to sell your car if there's an open recall against it [or at least a dealer is not allowed to]. So I think...

Why are TACC, AP (and ?FSD) so bad?

Indeed. I'm smart enough not to trust the system. Sadly not everyone is. Can't think of why they would get the idea that Autopilot won't automatically pilot the car, or that Full Self Driving won't fully self drive. Something to keep in mind when holding AP/FSD blameless because "it was...

Why are TACC, AP (and ?FSD) so bad?

The NHTSA investigation includes crashes from 2018-2021. The investigation itself was opened in 2021. I guess 3.5 years of having this problem is ok, as long as they fixed it after that. And of course we have no reason at all to suspect that the recent accident involved AP. I'm sure it's...

Why are TACC, AP (and ?FSD) so bad?

No, I'm the reality group. I'm in the group that sees all the disclaimers, etc., and I also see that it is called "Autopilot" and "Full Self Driving," and I also read the news and see that no less than 16 times Teslas have slammed into emergency vehicles while using Autopilot. Tesla and its...

Why are TACC, AP (and ?FSD) so bad?

There are numerous reports of Teslas on Autopilot crashing into emergency vehicles. Thus my conclusion that the code is buggy. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/tesla-cars-crashes-emergency-vehicles/

Why are TACC, AP (and ?FSD) so bad?

Your original statement was that the car(s) did not intentionally hit the emergency vehicles, which of course is correct. My obvious conclusion is that the vehicles slammed into emergency vehicles because the code (FSD and/or Autopilot) was buggy. And I contend it is grossly incompetent to...

After 5-weeks, I turned FSD Beta off!

That's fair. So for some, it made things better. For some, it made things worse. For others, it made no difference. Different people will conclude different things. But to me it reminds me of whack-a-mole. One thing gets fixed, another problem gets introduced. What that says to me is that...

Tesla Begrudgingly “Recalls” FSD Beta for NHTSA

Wow I have the opposite problem. Driving up a mildly curvy mountain pass using TACC (I don't have FSD), it slows down way too much. I have to turn off TACC when driving on such roads to avoid driving annoying slowly.
  28. COS Blue

After 5-weeks, I turned FSD Beta off!

On the contrary. We can conclude that it works fine for some, and not fine for others. Thus overall it is a net degradation.
  29. COS Blue

After 5-weeks, I turned FSD Beta off!

I get significantly more startling phantom braking events since my radar has been disabled. I can no longer drive toward the sun if it's low in the sky since radar was disabled. So, like, the car drives worse than it did before radar was disabled.

After 5-weeks, I turned FSD Beta off!

No, it does not. The only features I can think of that have been added to my car are (1) Adding stops to navigation and (2) Tidal. They are definitely improvements, but far from mind-blowing. Did they not reduce the option for "1" following distance when they disabled radar? And put a limit...

Never heard of Eberhard until today, but he's right. Tesla has done a fantastic job of making EVs that are practical, efficient, fast, beautiful, and fun to drive. From a software perspective, including Autopilot, they are a constant disappointment. I don't have FSD and I never will. They...

    Autopilot seems useless

I'm not sure that's a positive thing. My updated TACC is demonstrably worse than it was when I bought the car. Do you think any other car company would remotely disable radar whether you wanted them to or not? I don't.
  36. COS Blue

    Autopilot seems useless

"Useless" is too generous. Wait til you get a few phantom braking episodes, or wait til the car starts slowing down to under the speed limit because the sun is in its eyes.

The catastrophe of FSD and erosion of trust in Tesla

Ok sure I'll bite. It sucks compared to just having cruise control. Best cruise control system I ever used was on my 2008 BMW 3-series. You set that thing at 54mph and it would stay at 54mph. Not over, not under. Straight road, twisty road, flat, uphill, downhill, didn't matter. I loved...

No, not really. I'm disappointed (not mad) because Autopilot sucks, as does other basic automation in the Tesla (auto wipers, auto high-beams).
