Any reason not to hook up a battery tender to the 12 volt battery ?

To avoid 12V cycling, you need a tender that can provide about 50 watts -- at 12V, that's a tad over 4A. There are many recommendations on this thread for suitable 12V tenders of that specification. I popped the nose cone, connected some terminals to the battery posts, routed them inside the...

Any reason not to hook up a battery tender to the 12 volt battery ?

When driving, the traction battery provides all of the energy, including charging the 12V; you are not draining the 12V while driving despite the extra "widgets". Also, 12V batteries were not designed for very thirsty vampire drain when parked. Calculations indicate that the vampire drain on...

Any reason not to hook up a battery tender to the 12 volt battery ?

Sorry, but this advise is not correct. Keeping the car plugged in will certainly keep the 12 battery charged, but it won't prevent the cycling that wears out the 12V. The car when plugged in will NOT "float" charge the 12V, it will wait until the 12V is discharged to some level by the car...

    Firmware 8.1 - Classics

Yeah, I just noticed this myself. It probably began with the last firmware update. Very annoying.

Any reason not to hook up a battery tender to the 12 volt battery ?

The 12V is only charged when the main drive battery contractors are closed and the DC/DC converter is running. When the car is plugged in and not charging, the 12V will still cycle.

Any reason not to hook up a battery tender to the 12 volt battery ?

Spot on. The 12V battery only cycles when the car is parked and "off". Cycles kill the 12V battery, so driving a lot or using a tender when parked and "off" does the same thing to limit the 12V battery cycling. I'm at nearly 60k miles on a new car I picked up in Fremont in July 2014, and have...

    VisibleTesla

Brilliant! This worked for me as well, on the same configuration (VT 0.50.08 on Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.3). VT is sending notifications again.
  8. SteveS0353

    VisibleTesla

I'm running 0.50.08 on my Mac, and VT notifications stopped working after I updated the OS to Higher Sierra (10.13). I suspect it's the OS that's causing the blockage because those with the same version of VT on Windows are not reporting any issue. I tried disabling the firewall and some other...

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

and I have no idea how or why, but after suffering for days with this idiotic behavior of unmuting when the driver's door is opened, my car has suddenly and without a firmware update or reboot, stopped doing it. it also stopped the spontaneous reboot of the center screen about an hour after I...

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

Two bugs with 8.0 (2.36.108) on my classic P85+... Center 17" screen reboots constantly while driving. I get about 3 to 5 minutes, and the screen goes black, the A/C goes off, Bluetooth dies (bad if on the phone), and it reboots. I called Tesla service (from the car, call stays up but...

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

Correct. With Camera on the bottom, single tapping Media or Energy will replace Camera on the bottom regardless of what's on top. Single tap Nav and it will replace what's on top unless it's Camera, in which case Nav will occupy the bottom.
  12. SteveS0353

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

Exactly! I just ran out the garage to try it to be sure. Energy on top, Nav on the bottom, tap Phone and it replaces Nav on the bottom, leaving Energy on top.
  13. SteveS0353

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

Here's how I actually see it working... If Nav or Camera app tapped... - If neither the Nav nor Camera app are open on top, them load the one tapped on top. - If Nav or Camera are already open on top, load the one tapped at the bottom. If other app tapped... - Replace app on bottom All apps...
  14. SteveS0353

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

Not quite. It won't move any open app from bottom to top. If you have Energy on top an Camera on bottom, tap Nav and it will go on top replacing Energy leaving Camera on the bottom. But if you tap Phone and not Nav, Phone goes on the bottom replacing Camera, leaving Energy on top.
  15. SteveS0353

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

Yes. All apps will appear where you drop them from the pull down choice, Nav and Camera included. It's only the "tap to open" maneuver when Nav and Camera default to the top. All other apps "tap to open" default is the bottom. It works just fine for me (Nav on top and Energy on the bottom)...
  16. SteveS0353

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

No, that's not what happens with 8.0. If you have Camera on top and Nav below, and then tap the Energy app, it will replace the Nav on the bottom half of the screen leaving the camera on top. If you then tap the Nav app, it will replace the energy app on the bottom, leaving the Camera on top...

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

Yep, the UI works very similarly to 7.1 (and earlier). You can drag down on the icon in the top line to place it in either the top of bottom of the 17" screen.

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

I've just drive the car a few miles with 8.0, and apart from Nav and Media, the changes seem more cosmetic than anything else. There are some interesting behaviors though, like the top icon bar on the 17" retracts up when I put the car in drive to give more area of the map (the release notes...

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

It's hard to tell really, as I've never really had any issue seeing the numbers or tick marks on the IC even with my Rx sunglasses on. Here is a picture I just took in the sun, through my Rx sunglasses, with as much sun as I could get on the IC. The numbers and tick marks look the same to me...

Nope .... The climate control status works the same as 7.1. Any change from "Auto" just reports "Custom" with no additional information.

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

I took those pictures last night at 10:30 in the dark in my garage. I don't know yet if the contrast of the numbers and tick marks has changed. I'll let everyone know after I get the car out in the Southern California sun.

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

The odometer check box is NOT there on my car, but I could add Trip A and Trip B to the trips display on the IC. There is also a check box to avoid ferries and toll roads in the Nav setting screen, and I can rename Trip A and Trip B if I so desire.

    Firmware 8.0 - For Classic Model S

Top icons on 17" screen: Bottom icons on 17" display: It seems that it's a modern flat GUI, with familiar functionality at this level. I have not driven the car yet, that will be tomorrow when I get to experience the various items mentioned in the release notes (mostly nav and media) and...

    Model S and Pacemakers

I don't think it's related to the Model S. One TMC member performed a wide ranging study (reported here) which indicates that Model S is a pretty clean EMI environment. Modern implantable stimulators are designed very carefully to filter all sorts of radiation sources, but older devices could...

Charging interrupted, restarts after update to 6.2 (v2.5.21)

The issue seems unrelated to UMC or HPWC. I have both, and it has been happening with my car intermittently since firmware version 6.2-2.5.21. However, since I upgraded to 7.1-2.9.154 just over a week ago, I have not seem the issue. Here's hoping that the latest firmware finally nails this one.

Charging interrupted, restarts after update to 6.2 (v2.5.21)

For the record, my car has dual on-board chargers. Based on the anecdotal evidence on this thread, it started, for those who've seen it, with firmware 6.2-2.5.21. It occurs on both single and dual charger vehicles, only occurs on scheduled charging, and it's intermittent. I've tried, and so...

I've been having this issue intermittently for months, since 6.2-2.5.21. The car is now on 7.0-2.7.56 and it's still happening intermittently. I've spoken and emailed multiple times with someone who reached out to me because I publish my VIN on this forum. Tesla has pulled the logs from my...

    Firmware 7.0 - For Classic Model S

Thanks, I have been checking the tracker, and after your reply, figured out which table to inspect. I see now that there are 2 x P85+ with 2.9.12, but only one of those is "classic". There has been an intermediate version 2.7.77 too for P85+ classic which I have not received either.

    Firmware 7.0 - For Classic Model S

My classic P85+ is still on firmware version 2.7.56, the first version of 7.0, yet the version tracker indicates that other classic cars have received updates up to 2.9.12. Are there other classics still operating on the original v7.0?, or should I ping the SC to check if my car has "fallen in...

Who went to the Fashion Valley grand opening tonight?

I was there from about 5 to 6, also being a wallflower, enjoying the good food and cold beer. I ended up speaking to a couple of the Tesla employees. One told me that they have 7 (I think) HPWCs in the parking lot somewhere near the store.

Charging interrupted, restarts after update to 6.2 (v2.5.21)

Mute from steering wheel doesn't work in reverse

I've noticed this behavior since 5.x -- and it's not just the left front parking sensor. I reverse into my garage, and that sensor is quiet, but the ones on the right front and rear of the car sound off every time. I believe Cyclone has it right.

    Firmware 7.0 - For Classic Model S

Thanks Lucy. It's actually quite common with other brands to stop at a multiple of 5mph. My BMW M3 does that. Probably because of experience with that, and my own mild OCD, I think I prefer that algorithm. I like to set the speed at something exact (well, at least what the car thinks is a...

    Firmware 7.0 - For Classic Model S

There is a difference between how classic and AP cruise control works too, apart from the traffic aware / adaptive feature in AP cars. In my classic P85+, I can increase / decrease the cruise control set point by 1mph by pressing the cruise stalk up / down to the first position, or 5mph by...

Lucy, you are always welcome to hang out here, but what you posted is very interesting. You have an AP car, but did not spring for the AP functionality. So, what does your instrument cluster look like under V7.0 - the one we've seen posted in the other thread or the "classic" one with the...

    Decreasing rated range.

Another data point... I just had occasion to range charge and deplete a couple of times to support a road trip. This charge / discharge sequence has not changed the rated range, so I believe the rated range algorithm is calibrated and my pack is balanced. 18.8k miles in 16 months, 85kWh 'D'...

iPhone contacts will not download to phone on Tesla

Try telling the Telsa to "ignore" the iPhone, and then re-pair the iPhone fresh. I've had to do that occasionally on firmware updates to both the car and the iPhone. It seems there could be a subtle incompatibility between Bluetooth devices which pairing fresh seems to resolve; at least until...

Any reason not to hook up a battery tender to the 12 volt battery ?

It's not about saving energy; it's about saving the 12V battery. The 12V battery gets somewhere around 6 discharge / charge cycles per day, each about 30% depth, to supply the vampire load. The 12V battery has a specified cycle limit to wear out. Doing the calculations, it would seem that the...

Any reason not to hook up a battery tender to the 12 volt battery ?

If you disconnect the 12V battery, then the car will be totally isolated. As you say, nothing will be powered. That includes the radios (3G/LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, key fob,...). Remember, unlike other cars, the Model S has no physical key to open a door and relies on the radio signal between...
