Tesla raising $2 billion to fund the Model 3

Both places seem like reasonable venues to discuss. $2bn seems a touch on the low side given the aggressive schedule, but I'm in a completely different field.

Just announced. 500k cars by 2018 instead of 2020

The timeline to production likely hasn't changed all that much, maybe by 3-4 months at most. The real difference will likely be the speed with which they purchase and set-up the parallel assembly lines. Rather than stretching that ramp-up to last from 2018 to 2020, they're going to make that...

Model S and 3 Side View Comparison

I have no doubt the trunk as a whole is deeper than the opening. I have no problem with the trunk or opening as it currently exists, as I'm someone that is anti-hatchback. I just think the depth of the opening is the one place that could pose a problem with getting reasonably large things in...

Model S and 3 Side View Comparison

As a current Camry driver, the biggest thing I noticed about the trunk opening of the Model 3 is the depth. Width/height look fairly reasonable, but it's a very shallow/short distance from the beginning of the opening to where the glass cuts it off.

Part 2 reveal (post Q1 results CC)

Have to figure the degree of vertical integration that is somewhat unique to Tesla helps with their margins and ability to pack more "stuff" into the base price, if desired.

    Postpone New Car Purchase?

I had planned on replacing my car this coming fall. Now just not worth it. It's an 06 Camry with only 88k miles. It could last far longer than I want it to. I'm so tired of driving it. So boring.

Just announced. 500k cars by 2018 instead of 2020

Not currently an owner, and it makes me very nervous for the 3. The closest service center to me is over 2 hours and in another state. I think I'm glad I'm on the east coast and down the list so hopefully most kinks are worked out by the time my number comes up.

Just announced. 500k cars by 2018 instead of 2020

I'm more concerned about Service Center access than Supercharger access. Then again, I usually drive less than 40 miles/day and have a garage for easy home charging.

Which is why I mentioned 65/20/59 area of the Uptown district.

    Supercharger - Birmingham, AL

I think it depends on if they're only going to place one or two. If only one, then somewhere close to the 65 and 20/59 interchange like the uptown district or the 65 and 459 interchange like the galleria would probably be the biggest bang for the buck. People coming into town on 22 can catch...

    Model 3 Margins

Is it possible that someone could look at this demand, knowing how important it is for Tesla to be on-time and ramp up quickly, try to squeeze them for more money instead?
  13. Steepler2k

How will the long wait affect sales?

I want an EV, and I'd prefer it to be a Tesla. Honestly though, so much of that is the appearance and offerings that currently exist or are coming in the near future from other car companies. If there was an EV by another company that offered a sedan (or at least not an overly goofy looking...

Tesla confirms Model 3 will have less than 60kWh battery option

Model S/X prices are unlikely to change until they have electric competition that forces them to adjust.
  15. Steepler2k

What will Battery upgrades cost on Model 3?

I think this one will depend on the size of the battery increase and how much cost savings they're realizing with the gigafactory. If it's a 15kWh upgrade and the gigafactory is humming along, there's a possibility for <$5k. If 20kWh upgrade and/or gigafactory delays, then well over $5k.

Pickup from the Tesla Factory in California, will it be the fastest delivery option?

Care to translate? Best I can tell, it's passed the senate and waiting on action in the assembly (equivalent of House?). Sitting still for 3 months now.

Any Future Tesla Owners in GA?

    Model 3 Supercharging Capable Discussion

For highway charging, yes. For destination/local charging, probably less so. That's going to require more creative options, I think.

    Model 3 Supercharging Capable Discussion

I suspect there's a lack of demand. I live in the largest city in Alabama and I've seen maybe 5 Teslas here. Rarely see a Leaf, occasionally a Volt. I've heard of the BMW dealer selling a few of their new PHEVs. There are no Tesla stores or service centers in the entire state. That, plus round...

    Model 3 Supercharging Capable Discussion

The public (read: government) will have to buy into the charging infrastructure at some point. This seems like an ideal set-up to partner with the local power utility to arrange publicly available charging stations throughout their area. Charging per kWh would work out quite fine, given that...
  23. Steepler2k

    Model 3 Supercharging Capable Discussion

Depends on the state. Not all states offer plans with a variable rate based on the time of day. Mine (Alabama) does not, but then, our power is pretty cheap around the clock (my last bill was ~$0.133/kWh).

Might it be worthwhile to make a separate leather option? It's not part of the premium package on the S. Makes me assume they'll do the same with the 3, but you never know.
  25. Steepler2k

Do you have a charging location?

I have a garage that my wife and I keep barely organized enough to park our two cars in there. We'll put a NEMA 14-50 outlet in where I park probably end of 2017 if it looks like things are on track for me to get car in 2018 (east coast reservation, lined up before store opening). We're...

No hatch-back on model 3 - Anyone else disappointed.

I drive to work and back. That's pretty much it. I think hatchbacks (in the traditional sense, like a Bolt) are hideous. The liftback form of a Model S is appealing though, and I think few would look at it and say hatchback. My wife is an SUV person, so if we need to haul stuff, we'll just...

Has anyone else spent time calculating possible Model 3 pricing...

It's an $18k jump from a rear-wheel drive 70 to a 90D. The big unknown is how much savings from gigafactory are priced into the jump to the bigger battery. Also, how much is the difference? Will it be a 20kWh jump like for the S/X (e.g. 60/80). Or will efficiency improvements of...

Survey: Why did you pre-order a TESLA Model 3?

I hate going to the gas station. While my 2006 Camry only has 88k miles and could probably go for another decade (or more), I'm tired of it and want to replace it. I've looked at and/or driven: Audi A4, Lexus IS350/ES350/ES300h, BMW 330e, Accord, Camry, Sonata, Volvo S60... none of which makes...

If car companies can't invent a viable EV solution to compete, what happens to Elon's vison?

Hyundai's Ioniq variant due out later this year would agree with you. I think I read that the PHEV and the BEV versions will only be available in states with emissions standards. Continuing to leave those of us in other states devoid. I think the only thing that would make me jump ship from my...

How long was your wait in line? (I think we were at the slowest store..)

    Model 3 Supercharging Capable Discussion

Do you think there will come a point that there are "enough" superchargers? If so, then whenever that point is reached, the fee baked into the price of every Tesla that is devoted to the supercharger infrastructure is no longer required and can then go strictly to funding maintenance and power...

What is your true Model 3 budget?

I'm trying to keep it under 50k pre-tax. Supercharging and all autopilot features are a definite. I'd prefer next-gen seats +/- leather and metallic paint. I'd really like both bigger battery and dual motor. Have no desire for performance packages, upgraded interior, sound, wheels, etc. I think...

    Supercharger - Mobile, AL

How many Model 3 should Tesla make the first Year? Poll

Any Future Tesla Owners in GA?

Not a Georgia resident, but I was at the Marietta store to reserve the 3 last week. I got there about 45 minutes before open and was in the mid 80s in line. I think someone counted ~140 by the time doors opened.
  39. Steepler2k

    Supercharger - Mobile, AL

Born and raised in Mobile, though I haven't lived there for almost 14 years. To say that area is not what it once was, is a massive, massive understatement. That mall is currently undergoing some investment and renovation, can cross fingers that it helps. No telling.
