2021.40.7 vs 2021.44.6? But released on the same day.

2021.40.7 vs 2021.44.6 were both released on the same day. December 16.

Which is better? I assume 2021.44.6 has more features since it’s numbered higher?

Why release 2021.40.7 on Dec 16 when there are cars already on 2021.44.5?

Why would a car update to the “lower” 2021.40.7 instead of the larger 2021.40.6 on the December 16 release date?

It appears there’sa 2021.44.x update track and a separate 2021.40.x update track? I’m so confused.

The 40.x tree and 44.x tree are different. It all depends what updates got applied to your car at what time.

For example, if you were on 36.5 you might have gotten .40 early, and if you didn't have issues might have been given 44.5. Meanwhile someone else might be on 36.8, then 40.7, then 44.25. It's really hard to explain...

I'm on 44.6 now. There are 2 more updates in this tree 44.6.1 and 44.7. They are most likely not going to give me those since the 44.x tree is out already. Meanwhile maybe someone in an early 44.x tree (like 44.0), might have gotten 44.7 to fix some bugs that they have in 44.0. In that case they might get 44.25 directly later.

We have a Model S and Model 3, both late 2018 models. Both received 2021.36.5.1 in mid-November, and 2021.44.6 the other day. Prior to receiving 36.5.1, both cars were in the FSD Beta queue, but I removed them from the queue, partly because that prevented them from getting updates. Lots of different variables that determine which updates you do and do not receive.

For a visual attempt at trying to understand the whole Tesla download thing, take a look at the table in Post #1 here: Trying to Make Sense....

Most of you probably already know about Not A Tesla App, right? Good source of up-to-date info about Tesla software and App updates. And there are the download sampling data (from subsets of Tesla cars whose owners subscribe to these aftermarket Tesla app services) performed by Teslafi and Teslascope.
