21 inch turbine wheel crack survey

I am another one in the cracked rim crew. Never had any car with any alloy wheels fail in this way but the first wheel I cracked in October. Had the S85 since July. First tyre pressure warnings happened just after having new tyres fitted. Then it was ok for a while then it wasn't then it was. It was peculiar as the tyre would randomly hold pressure for a day of driving or it just wouldn't at all.

I suspect a second has just cracked in the last week as there was a mysterious bang a few days ago and now the tyre isn't holding pressure as well as it was. Noise happened in a slow moving traffic queue. Had the first one welded but it is an ugly looking weld. Repairer said they don't grind down the weld as that weakens the wheel even further. Managed to get a grey turbine from Ebay that looked new. That's been on a few weeks.

I'm looking at some el cheapo Wolfrace X10s as they're load rated and almost cheap enough to consider disposable as they're a fraction of the cost of continually buying used 21s.

The car display with all 4 tyre pressures is a blessing and a curse :)

2021 S LR+ 8K mikes, hit a small pothole at 35MPH 1/10/22. Tesla would not warranty, had to file an insurance claim as it is $2100 to replace the wheel, tire and TPMS

It looks like the pothole straight-up deformed your rubber far enough to impact the rim. That's one hell of a small pothole.
Which is why I think the previous owner may have hit something prior and that “pothole” must have had something in it. The road is under heavy construction. I just never expected that smal “bump” to cause a loud bang and this….I will switch to 20’s or 19’s if it happens again

I have a 2019 Model S P100D with 21" Sonic Carbon Twin Turbine Wheels, about 50k miles. Just had a crack happen (front right wheel) on a pothole. The wheel/tire was exhibiting a slow leak for about a week prior, so I don't know if it already had a small crack that was made larger.

@Mediocrates If you didn't find any other clear source for the slow leak (like a nail in the tire), then I'm guessing it was the crack.

We noticed a cracked 21" wheel by it slowly leaking air.
