$70+ for Tire Rotation?

I recently brought our car in for some issues and since I had 10k miles on the tires I asked them to rotate/balance. The Rockville SC charged $105 for the rotate/balance. They also did a ton of service bulletin updates for free, installed new batteries in our keyfobs, etc.

So do it yourself. Might change your mind about relative value. In any event DIY is always quicker and good exercise too!

Agreed its a bit of a chore. But there are places like Discount Tire that will rotate your tires for free no matter where they came from. They did my Leaf tires at 5K for $0, and told me to come csk again for the same st $10K! Clearly they are hoping you remember that when it's time to buy new tires.

Tesla, having no real incentive to jockey your tires around, charges a fee. Having a lift & the right tools already makes $70 seem a little high, though. My SC told me when I picked up my car last week that now rotations AND alignments are covered with pre-paid maintenance, which for me changes the value proposition a bit still not sure if it's enough to make me pull the trigger, but it helps.

Pretty sure they set this policy because of all the early cars delivered with rear toe out (including mine I believe - though they never actually confirmed this). Toe out in the rear results in unstable acceleration and rapidly worn tires. I had to get my first set of tires replaced waaaaay to early and I think it's Tesla's fault - though I doubt they would ever admit it.

My problem with Tesla is the inconsistent "policies" among different locations. It looks like every service specialist/center is making their own company policy.

If they don't want to do tire rotations or patches, it's fine with me, just say it clearly on the website. And if the SCs still wants to do it as a courtesy to customers, then do so by clearly saying it's not the company policy to perform those services, but they will do so by waiving all liabilities.

$70 for tire rotation for those who prepaid for maintenance is way too high.

I had my tires rotated and balanced this past Friday. NO CHARGE. I'm at 7,300 miles and have the pre-paid service plan. When I requested the tire rotation, they specifically asked if I have the pre-paid plan and indicated that rotation every 5,000 miles is included with the pre-paid service.

That's how it should be. I'm quite certain this is even noted explicitly in the pre-paid policy documents.

That said, I myself have gotten different answers on things between different service centers, so Tesla Corporate policies are either not well-enforced or not made common knowledge among the SCs. It kind of gives the impression each SC is making stuff up as they go along, which probably is the case a little bit. It hasn't affected my experience at all to this point, but it's hard to know what to believe when you get conflicting answers.

Alysashley79, interesting what you said, because Rockville Service Center told me last week that the policy changed and they no do the waiver form, and that it is now as I described above.

my my car is at tesla right now as,I type this. They just dismounted my haakas and put my primacys back on my tesla wheels. They did a couple other little things as well and I'll pick the car up in the he morning.

I was told at the Bellevue SC that you get one free rotation between your 12500 mile maintenance. I skipped my first 12500 maintenance (as I drop that distance in the first 5 months of ownership) so ended up paying $65 for my 2nd rotation. First one was free.

Sorry if I don't understand what is going on here, but I want to toss another coin into the fountain. Another possibility.

I decided to buy OEM tires from Tire Rack. I bought my all weather tires as Tire Rack put them on sale in the fall, thanks to all you who buy winter tires. I got them for about $100 off regular price. Each.

Before I went this route, I went to a local tire dealer that I had used before, and asked them how much they would charge me for installing four tires. I was told $25, each. Included disposal of old tires, and tire rotations whenever I needed them. I now have near 40,000 miles on my car, and get about 20,000 miles per set. I am getting the third set put on tomorrow. They only charged me $25 per tire, like they said.

Interestingly, I recently got my tires rotated as part of another warranty item, at a Tesla Service Center. Although I had always heard that radial tires should be rotated front to back ONLY, my tire with the slow leak moved from left front to right front. As I was getting it changed soon, I didn't worry about it, but Service Centers are populated by mere humans.

I would highly recommend to the few and the brave among you, to save about $300 bucks every now and then, buy your tires on sale at Tire Rack (the savings include tax and shipping to your house by UPS), and drive them down to your friendly tire dealer and let them do the work. Give them a tour, while you're at it, which they will love. And have them rotate them whenever you want, for free.

I love Tesla, but there is something wrong if their policy is not to make a profit on service but they charge $70 for tire rotation. Tire rotation is extremely easy to do. Even a simple oil change is often more difficult. I've done tire rotations many times myself with only jack stands and a lug wrench. The service centers have a car lift and power equipment. Rotating the tires is probably a 5 minute job. That comes out to about $840 per hour for labor (as no parts are involved). Perhaps they are using minimum 1 hour increment for charging? Then it would just be $70 an hour. Still outrageous. I don't know. But the cost is waaaay off from what it should be. Again, I'm a HUGE Tesla fan, but I'm calling BS against Tesla on this one.

Another option is to use Costco. I've found, particularly when Costco is running one of the promotions, that the overall price at Costco is cheaper than I used to get when I would buy tires from Tire Rack and have them installed at a shop. The Costco shops do only one thing -- tires. I have a friend who brings his F40 there. I trust them to get it right.
