Oh Lord, I worked in such a pressure cooker for over 15 years. Now at age 64, I'm looking to reduce my stress, not further increase it (besides, I'm not wanting to move to CA). I still do consulting for some of the suppliers around here (including for Tesla), and can still shut down several billions dollars worth of assembly lines with one wrong click of a mouse (arrrgh!). My goal is to train some others to take over this stuff - but it's difficult to find people who want to work that hard...

This is really cool! So maybe you can answer the question that others in the car industry didn't want to think about when I asked them: Will these auto car brands adapt to the pace of fast innovation once google, apple and tesla all get involved by virtue of redesigning themselves as companies or will they just license from google or mobileye etc amd just hope for the best? Kind of want to see the world turn to the tech space for cars and make ridesharing a thing. The economics don't work out for most to be able to spend $35k+ on a car when it's not used most of the time plus cost of education and housing is inflating at a ridiculous pace.

Always remember, car companies are publicly owned corporations, and their first priority is going to be to increase shareholder value. (Even Tesla will have to abide by this eventually, if they want to stay in business). Their consideration of new technologies (incl. new ways of doing business, etc.) will be governed by this (plus whatever is the philosophy du jour at the Harvard Business School).

I tend to agree with the approach of letting specialist suppliers figure out the hard stuff (self-driving, etc.) and buy/license these subsystems. For the most part, automakers are system integrators and logistics experts - that's what they are good at (not developing difficult niche technologies).

Regarding the idea of ride sharing, I would expect this to be developed by third parties (where are Hertz and Avis in this space??) - it is outside the area of expertise of automakers (who would also have a hard time trying to make money doing it).
