Thanks for providing additional “evidence” that this mods does the trick! The Green filter works. See what it has collected in a week. Only $5 from Home Depot. Enough for about 6 filters.View attachment 537169
I bought that air filter and tried it. Blocks too much air, to get the same amount of air flow for a fan running at speed 2, I needed to run it at speed 7. Threw it out right after that test.
Will try that green filter thing!
I cut and fit that green high flow, moisture resistant fibrous HVAC Return air side filter in mine; works great. This is the green fibrous stuff you cut to size and put inside your large HVAC return air grate(s). Keeps needles out and allows for max airflow.

Just go to any HD and you’ll find a single sheet for cheap. IIRC, $4.99.Is this it? AAF Flanders 24 in. x 36 in. x 1 in. Cut-To-Fit MERV 4 Air Filter (Case of 12)-40655.012436 - The Home Depot
I could only find it on HomeDepot.com as a $120 12-pack. And the closest in-store I can find is this blue washable filter, but it appears to have much more dense weave of fibers than the green one in the photos.
I got hit with the stinky-cabin syndrome and I discovered a decent amount of debris at the bottom of the cabin filter compartment, and it was a bitch to trying snake a hose down there to vacuum the stuff out. So I want to avoid having to repeat that task in the future.
May work well for leaves and twigs, but the challenge here in the Seattle area is fir needles! Green filter works 100%!The plastic filter cover was depricated, new design a few posts above. Lays flat, drops in, no tape, glue, etc.
The one on the above link is from the ali website in China. It takes them 20 to 45 days to get the part to the US. None of the locals have that new part yet, they only carry the one that requires the double sided tape. The plastic filter cover was depricated, new design a few posts above. Everything that Home Depot has in stock is usually listed on their website, which is why I asked. But I went to the local HD to check anyway, and it wasn’t there.
I ended up getting a “True Blue” cut-to-fit frameless/washable filter for $10 instead. After installing it, I don’t notice any significant reduction in airflow when pulling in outside air, so it’ll probably suffice.
