This is what Roadster 2.5 has. This this would work although it does take more time then a stalk.

Another solution may be to have "creep mode" engage when the car is put into reverse. At least the driver would feel it begin to back up when they take their foot off of the brake. I know that many choose not to have it on for normal driving, but is there any reason not to want it on when reversing?
 
There's no good reason to have it on, and as I stated in the example where I was backed in to, "Creep" wouldn't help (Person felt the car rolling backwards, wanted to go forwards, so pressed accelerator) if anything, on a vehicle that doesn't normally creep it would make things worse as the expected reason for rolling backwards would be a hill you need to overcome rather than a gear selector in the wrong position. Making the "fix" to accelerate rather than check the shifter.
