I've been seeing a lot of vin#s in the 100XXX lately. I've also read conflicting things about if they go in order. Since mine is 69XXX instead of 100XXX should I read into that at all?
Check your door pillar. Suspect the car was produced in last 30 days.

When I tracked my VIN - 99xxx - the car was trucked 8/30 from Fremont to BNSF railway in Richmond, CA on 8/30. Truck had M3 VINs ranging from 66xxx to 100xxx.

I suspect some assigned VINs were delayed due to parts shortages or batch scheduling. When our M3 is delivered 9/22 I’ll check production date on door pillar. Pretty sure it will show last week of August.

It would help, (plus everybody is just interested)....if you could specify what your configuration is....easiest way is go to your profile and dump the info into your signature box, then it always pops up in your messages :) and congrats getting a VIN#, another step out of the way ;)

2018. Look at your VIN if you've been assigned one. If you see a J in the 10th digit, that refers to the year of production, 2018.

But there is no model year concept like other auto manufacturers right ? At some point in Q4, may be with in last 2 weeks of Dec, Tesla might change the VIN to reflect 2019 in the VIN (10th digit as noted) which could be sold in 2018 itself or 2019. But there is no planned model year approach to compare 2018 vs 2019 I guess.. which is new to many of us.

In other-words, 2017 , 2018 and 2019 M3's are all one and the same till Tesla do a refresh/face lift of some kind which I believe they did to Model S once so far in several years with the nose design.

Yes, that's right. No model years from a technology/design standpoint. You could get entirely different parts based on what week your car is made. However, I believe for purposes of insurance, labeling on vendor sites like TireRack etc., they need to have an official model year designation.

I should have said this earlier. Everybody on here keep this in mind, once you take delivery you will be an evangelist for EV and Tesla specifically. People will surround your car when you go to the store or out to dinner. Dont freak out, they have questions, they want to to learn what you did. Be respectful build enthusiasm...you'll find it's contagious!

I'm supposed have delivery in 8 days. When should I hear from a Delivery Specialist? Emails to my advisor are ignored. Phone call to my delivery center revealed no car and no VIN has been assigned yet. I assume this is normal practice for Tesla but 8 days is close.
I have heard from multiple sources, 2-5 days. Look at it this way, 8 days is next week, they are focusing on this week.

My curiosity is just eating me up, so I have to ask... OT, of course:

I have yet to see a single person post a numbered VIN section without hiding the last few digits with XXX. I can only assume that this is for some privacy concern... or is it just out of habit now because everybody does it? What *is* that privacy concern? Especially on a board where we're all happily discussing in public the gritty details of taking delivery of our $55-$80,000 vehicles. The VIN seems to be held as close to the chest as a SSN.

Of course I see the same thing with license plates being obscured. I mean unless they're vanity plates, and then I guess the privacy concern takes a back seat to... the vanity?

Both of these numbers - VIN and license - are out there on display to the unwashed masses every day. But on a forum like this, the privacy risk is too high?

Having had an automotive-based website for many, many years, I never even considered hiding all this information... and in my case all of it is still on display publicly. I'm genuinely just curious, without meaning to judge: Just what is the privacy concern with posting an entire VIN?

Yes I am curious too! I just figured that anyone who hides the last few digits of their VIN either keeps their key fob in aluminum foil or just saw someone else do it, and does the same thing,

Wasn't there a guy (just last month) that convinced Tesla to add a VIN to his phone app (so he could steal the car)?

I can't answer that, I can only say I did it because I am unaware of the risk and on the flip side see zero benefit to others of knowing my VIN down to the hundreds or even the tens digit. Why take a potential risk for no reward?

HAHA people are just following what has been done since the beginning. I hide mine on threads work people talking about rejected VINs just to prevent adding to a list of I for some unknown reason in this universe decide to reject my car. Everyone one must think it has to be private and they haven't been educated in otherwise.
