So this is from this morning at the town nearest our location (real photo: nothing photoshopped here).

Now, don't worry: it's...almost...certainly in error.
But this is the first real cold snap in Alaska in a good number of years. Yikes.

So will Obama extend/renew the Federal tax credit for electric cars before leaving office?

Not sure he'll be able to get to it, he's going to be busy implementing Sharia law, setting up the death panels, taking everyone's guns, forcing us into gay marriages, performing mandatory abortions, sending people to FEMA camps... He's really been procrastinating on that stuff, it's going to be a busy last few hours.

And AudubonB, that's %(*$&% cold! I've seen low -40's to near -50F a few times and that was cold enough! It doesn't go down that low here anymore, and the moose are suffering for it. Not cold enough to freeze-off their ticks most winters.

To summarize:

  1. US invents practical PV;
  2. Republicans block the nurturing of a domestic PV industry because it conflicts with vested fossil fuel interests and AGW denial.
  3. The Chinese government nurtures a domestic industry that then leads to yet another economic powerhouse industry and the means to combat AGW
  4. Republicans conclude that AGW is a Chinese hoax (using a conspiracy of liberal scientists.)

5. US puts tariffs on Chinese modules because we can't figure out how to make them as cheaply as they do. (See point #2).

From the Good News desk:

I keep track of the nation's weekly Drought Monitor that NOAA provides. For the very first time in I don't know how many years, as of this week - Jan 24 2017 - there is not a single portion of the United States that is in the worst "Exceptional Drought" category, and there is only a minuscule amount in the second worst "Extreme". You can scan through every week since Jan 2000 here: U.S. Drought Monitor Weekly Comparison

It goes on and on. As far as the content of the article, Bates no longer works at NOAA. Some might say because he was disgusted by their "cover-ups." Some might say he's trying to get some attention for his new consulting business by going to the Daily Mail (?!) instead of a less-clickbait-y reporting outlet.

I'm sure some of the other, more involved participants will correct me, but doesn't this just mean that the sea data needs a slight adjustment (as most data often do?)

I just said it was interesting. What are you trying to say?

Odd how fake news jumps all over climate research when they believe they've exaggerated the warming... yet are completely silent when research is published showing that global warming is worse then predicted....

Greenland ice is melting 7 percent faster than previously thought

Sea levels are rising faster than scientists thought

Climate Change: Ocean Warming Underestimated

How the IPCC Underestimated Climate Change

It's almost like they have an agenda...

Not at all. Better descriptors include: ignorant, ill-informed, inane and illiterate (of science).

The publication of this type of nonsense comes as no surprise. The fossil fuel industry has more than 100 trillion reason$ to lie about climate change. As noted in a 2015 Citigroup report “Why a Low Carbon Future Doesn’t Have to Cost the Earth” while a rapid transition to clean energy (as contemplated by the Paris Agreement) would actually save money, relative to continued reliance on fossil fuels, it would result in the stranding of more than $100 trillion of fossil fuel assets. There is no true scientific doubt as to the reality of manmade global warming, and there are nearly 200 worldwide scientific organizations that hold the position that climate change has been caused by human action. Of these, the national science academies are generally viewed as the “gold standard”. Since 2001, 34 national science academies, three regional academies, and both the international InterAcademy Council and International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences have made formal declarations confirming human induced global warming and urging nations to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. The 34 national science academy statements include 33 who have signed joint science academy statements and one individual declaration by the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2007.

Joint national science academy statements
  • 2001 Following the publication of the IPCC Third Assessment Report, seventeen national science academies issued a joint statement, entitled "The Science of Climate Change", explicitly acknowledging the IPCC position as representing the scientific consensus on climate change science. The statement, printed in an editorial in the journal Science on May 18, 2001, was signed by the science academies of Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, New Zealand, Sweden, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
  • 2005 The national science academies of the G8 nations, plus Brazil, China and India, three of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in the developing world, signed a statement on the global response to climate change. The statement stresses that the scientific understanding of climate change is now sufficiently clear to justify nations taking prompt action, and explicitly endorsed the IPCC consensus. The eleven signatories were the science academies of Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
  • 2007 In preparation for the 33rd G8 summit, the national science academies of the G8+5 nations issued a declaration referencing the position of the 2005 joint science academies' statement, and acknowledging the confirmation of their previous conclusion by recent research. Following the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, the declaration states, "It is unequivocal that the climate is changing, and it is very likely that this is predominantly caused by the increasing human interference with the atmosphere. These changes will transform the environmental conditions on Earth unless counter-measures are taken." The thirteen signatories were the national science academies of Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, India, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
  • 2007 In preparation for the 33rd G8 summit, the Network of African Science Academies submitted a joint "statement on sustainability, energy efficiency, and climate change" :
A consensus, based on current evidence, now exists within the global scientific community that human activities are the main source of climate change and that the burning of fossil fuels is largely responsible for driving this change. The IPCC should be congratulated for the contribution it has made to public understanding of the nexus that exists between energy, climate and sustainability.

— The thirteen signatories were the science academies of Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, as well as the African Academy of Sciences

  • 2008 In preparation for the 34th G8 summit, the national science academies of the G8+5 nations issued a declaration reiterating the position of the 2005 joint science academies’ statement, and reaffirming "that climate change is happening and that anthropogenic warming is influencing many physical and biological systems." Among other actions, the declaration urges all nations to "(t)ake appropriate economic and policy measures to accelerate transition to a low carbon society and to encourage and effect changes in individual and national behaviour." The thirteen signatories were the same national science academies that issued the 2007 joint statement.
  • 2009 In advance of the UNFCCC negotiations to be held in Copenhagen in December 2009, the national science academies of the G8+5 nations issued a joint statement declaring, "Climate change and sustainable energy supply are crucial challenges for the future of humanity. It is essential that world leaders agree on the emission reductions needed to combat negative consequences of anthropogenic climate change". The statement references the IPCC's Fourth Assessment of 2007, and asserts that "climate change is happening even faster than previously estimated; global CO2 emissions since 2000 have been higher than even the highest predictions, Arctic sea ice has been melting at rates much faster than predicted, and the rise in the sea level has become more rapid." The thirteen signatories were the same national science academies that issued the 2007 and 2008 joint statements.

Children who don't grow up turn into Trump... a man with the maturity and intelligence of a three year old who has learned (like most three year olds) that the world revolves around him and he can get what he wants by throwing a tantrum (in the short run). In the long run, there are a lot of smarter and more mature people (the rest of the world) who will out-game him.

I'm getting really tired of people in major roles saying climate change is still "debatable".

1) It shows how little they know and have researched

2) It keeps humanity from moving forward

Even when the people in the major roles are in the government of the most powerful country in the world, it will primarily keep their own country from moving forward.

Still, it is being noticed in Europe that the US now has a budding wind energy industry.

Btw, at a capacity factor of 50%, just three million 10MW wind turbines would cover all the energy (not just electricity) consumption of the entire planet. Then no people in major roles would have to start a war to secure their oil supply...
