Climate Change / Global Warming Discussion

Global heating is accelerating faster than is currently understood and will result in a key temperature threshold being breached as soon as this decade, according to research led by James Hansen, the US scientist who first alerted the world to the greenhouse effect. The Earth’s climate is more sensitive to human-caused changes than scientists have realized until now, meaning that a “dangerous” burst of heating will be unleashed that will push the world to be 1.5C hotter than it was, on average, in pre-industrial times within the 2020s and 2C hotter by 2050, the paper published on Thursday predicts.

The main drivers are still the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, which are used to treat infections. But the study suggests the problem is being worsened by rising levels of air pollution. The study did not look at the science of why the two might be linked. Evidence suggests that particulate matter PM2.5 can contain antibiotic-resistant bacteria and resistance genes, which may be transferred between environments and inhaled directly by humans, the authors said. Air pollution is already the single largest environmental risk to public health. Long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with chronic conditions such as heart disease, asthma and lung cancer, reducing life expectancy.

More on air pollution. So nice when you get free pass polluting, maybe there should be a pollution tax to pay for health insurance of people impacted by dieself trucking.

Permafrost melting because of the Global Warming issue causes the release in the atmosphere of methane (CH4), a Green House Gas which is much more powerful in its Green House Effect than CO2.
So the GHE could cause a real domino effect dangerous for mankind.
To this concern I would like to point out that this graph that we know of the atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere, which is already alarming, doesn't consider methane. The graph considering also methane to the effect of GHE, which is called Equivalent CO2 concentration graph, has to be shifted upwards of 80 units!

for a (fictional, so far) depiction of the release of a __LOT__ of CH4 into the atmosphere

Countries have agreed key measures to supply funds to the world’s most vulnerable people to repair the damage from climate breakdown. Governments from richer and poorer countries drew up the blueprint for a new “loss and damage” fund after a tense two-day meeting under UN guidance in Abu Dhabi that ended late on Saturday night.

Beef, soy and palm oil products driving deforestation are still being imported into the UK, despite government promises this practice would end, data has revealed. Campaigners have criticised the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) for failing to put practices in place to stop the import of goods from areas with high deforestation rates. This is despite the government having promised at the Cop26 climate conference in 2021 to implement the rules.

The impact of human activity on the Earth system could result in unpredictable chaos from which there is no return, physicists have calculated.

Using a theory conceived to model superconductivity, a team of physicists led by Alex Bernadini of the University of Porto in Portugal showed in a preprint paper this year that, after a certain point, we will not be able to restore equilibrium to Earth's climate.

A finite amount of human activity could result in a Hothouse Earth from which there is no return, the research suggests. They detailed their work in a paper made available in April 2022 on the preprint server arXiv, which remains to be peer-reviewed.

"The implications of climate change are well known (droughts, heat waves, extreme phenomena, etc.)," physicist Orfeu Bertolami told Live Science last year.

"If the Earth System gets into the region of chaotic behavior, we will lose all hope of somehow fixing the problem."

These two militaries have about 900 bases overseas,” said Rogaly. “The effects of having all these military installations across the world is going to be extremely severe when you’re supplying them with fossil fuels, clearing land, building installations for military activity, contaminating with toxic waste.” Basav Sen, climate policy project director at the Institute for Policy Studies thinktank, who reviewed the report, said the research is “crucial”. “We can’t account for our emissions without accounting for the military-industrial complex,” he said.

Texas, despite being at the epicenter of the oil industry, has scant measures to prevent companies from dumping their unwanted methane into the shared atmosphere. It is “really frustrating that Texas continues to allow oil and gas companies to pollute with impunity when we’ve got a great solution staring us in the eye”, said Luke Metzger, executive director of Environment Texas. “Unfortunately it’s clear that Texas is not going to stand up to big oil and adopt sensible standards to cut methane.”

Cutting methane would have the same benefit to the climate as removing all cars and trucks from the road,” he said. “This really should be the ‘Cop of methane’. If the US and Europe, which is the largest importer of natural gas, act, then it will just be the best possible news for the climate.”

Luckily EPA is going to intervene within this month on this matter with a new REGULATION to work out this methane, which is a GHG 80 times more powerful than CO2, issue.

Don't forget the cattle (more methane) and Texans who love steak (even more methane). :0

Ocean acidification issue

In the following picture the chemical equation showing how CO2 combines with water in the oceans is reported (ocean acidification). Such a chemical equation demonstrate the double damage done by CO2 to the oceans. In fact the consumption of carbonate ions impedes calcification and the formation of bicarbonate ions increases the acidity of the oceans (Oceans Ph lowered).
The picture has been took by this article that I report for reference:

What is Ocean Acidification?

The Ocean Acidification issue, caused by the too high concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, is main cause of damage of the coral reefs IMHO.

I like this action took by President Biden to combat the Climate Change issue. Hope that also Italian politicians will understand the gravity of the Climate Crisis as President Biden did.

The Climate Change issue hit also us in Italy lately. Since the Climate Change issue is a Global issue this was expected to happen.
That's why I wish that also Italian politicians will take unprecedented actions to fight the Climate Change issue as President Biden did.

We worked out the ozone hole issue thanks to a worldwide treaty, we can do same thing with the Climate Change/Global Warming issues.
But in the case of the Climate Change/Global Warming issues the worldwide treaty has to include a new International Organization superviewing all Countries worldwide to check that all Countries will respect the REGULATIONS of the treaty IMO.
