Germany’s emissions hit a 70-year low last year as Europe’s largest economy reduced its reliance on coal.

A study by the thinktank Agora Energiewende found that Germany emitted 673m tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2023, 73m tonnes fewer than in 2022.

The drop was “largely attributable to a strong decrease in coal power generation”, Agora said, accounting for a reduction of 46m tonnes in CO2 emissions.

Over the past few decades, climate scientists have made huge strides in understanding the future climate. But after recent weeks of extreme heat and devastating floods it’s clear that, although climate models have provided good information about overall rising temperatures, they can’t be sure what level of destruction each notch on the thermometer will bring.

Azerbaijan, which is hosting this year’s UN climate talks, plans to increase its fossil fuel production by a third over the next decade, according to an analysis shared exclusively with the Guardian. The forecast indicates the Cop29 host will grow its annual gas production by about 12bn cubic metres (bcm) over the next 10 years, which is considered a crucial period in which global leaders must cut fossil fuel production if they hope to limit global heating.

One third of the months of 2023 got a Temperature Deviation higher than the threshold of 1.5C set by the Agreement of Paris. What will happen in November at COP29 in Azerbaijan if first ten months in a row of 2024 will get a Global Temperature Deviation higher than 1.5C?
Maybe that the UN will intervene to get COP29 decisions independent from the interests of Petrostates?

Report a graph showing the Earth's Energy Imbalance (EEI), which is total Absorbed Solar Radiation (heat due to infrared rays trapped within the atmosphere) minus Outgoing Longwave radiation, from 2001 to 2023.

Something to think about... solar panels convert sun's energy to electricity instead of being converted to heat immediately or reflected into space as light. Taken as a lone variable, increase in solar panel adoption, we would see an increase the ASR.

Of course, since solar panel's electricity production reduces burning of fossil fuel, we should see a net decrease of heat and CO2 added into the atmosphere, which reduces global warming.

Interesting question, here's a bit more perspective on that ...

I'd like to see an analysis on water use to wash panels a few times a year vs water to establish trees on degraded / arid lands. Or better yet put panels above a tree planting and is the increased "hard scape" run off to help irrigate the trees...

If we stopped eating meat, it would free up 70% of crop and pasture land for re-wilding.

(Note on the video... she seems to think that planting trees would increase CO2 production?)

@eevee-fan
look at the Sankey diagram and note rejected energy vs energy services. solar way more efficient than fossil so it appears to not be a 1:1 but perhaps 2:1 or more upon cursurary glance so should be faster

Amazing that of 100.3 Quads US energy consumption that 67.3 Quads are "rejected" (wasted). This is primarily from inefficient fossil fuel burning.
Switching to renewable electricity can drop US energy consumption by 67%

The internationally agreed threshold to prevent the Earth from spiraling into a new superheated era will be “passed for all practical purposes” during 2024, the man known as the godfather of climate science has warned.

James Hansen, the former Nasa scientist credited for alerting the world to the dangers of climate change in the 1980s, said that global heating caused by the burning of fossil fuels, amplified by the naturally reoccurring El Niño climatic event, will by May push temperatures to as much as 1.7C (3F) above the average experienced before industrialization.

Actually, because of the research that I am doing about record Temperatures all around the world, I agree with James Hansen that VERY SOON we will overtake the threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius set by the Agreement of Paris.

The Ocean Heat Content (OHC) is not only increasing but also accelerating.
This is NOT GOOD because hurricanes originate in the Oceans because of warm water.
in addition, over the last 450 years, the anthropogenic global warming is both shifting the hurricanes more northerly, hitting further up the east coast of the US and increasing intensity
