CPO Experience/Process December 2018

Put down my deposit on a CPO Model S on Wednesday December 12th. I wanted to detail my experience for anyone else going through the process or thinking of going through the process in the near future.

First, if you are located in NY state, Tesla will not honor a deposit you put down on a CPO in another state (with few exceptions), and will force you to pay a $2,000 shipping fee to have the car brought to NY. I'm not the only one who has had this experience and "apparently" there are rules, specific to Tesla, regarding where you can purchase a car. If anyone has more information on this, please share.

So I found a car in NY, and paid the deposit. The car immediately appeared in my Tesla account, and asked for me to fill out and upload documentation. Super easy and efficient. I send my local CPO specialist my order number and she called and asked me some necessary information. On the order it tell you that you must take delivery within 7 days or your deposit may be forfeited.

Then I was told I would be contacted by a delivery specialist in 48 hours, Friday, to set up a pick up date. This is where I would take my trade, already had a trade-in quote from Tesla, and pick up the car.

Online, it also gives you a pdf card of your car with its current specs (I attached the online card).

This is a photo that was directly from their Used Inventory website. Just FYI, these photos are NOT the norm. Some cars have excellent photos and others have horrible photos. This is definitely something Tesla CPO needs to work on. The photos I received BEFORE I made a deposit were excellent thought. Again, this is not the norm.

These are only a few of the photos and there were many more showing the condition of the car and any faults.

I've read a lot of horror stories regarding Tesla CPO deliveries and pick ups. I will keep you updated. More to come....

Update...
Received a call from California from the Delivery Specialist. I gave more information and asked about the 7 day timeline. He told me that has changed and not to worry about that. I mentioned that I'm leaving town for the holidays and won't be back till second week of January and he said not to worry since they don't have the title and NY takes "a while" to get that paperwork to them. HOW DON'T THEY HAVE THE TITLE?!! I checked the date the photos were taken and they were taken in JULY! July and no title?? I'll keep you updated, but this is looking like a long haul...

I'm not surprised. My car was supposedly off lease in May and I bought it at the end of November. It's been almost a month and no title, just excuses about why they don't have the title. This is something they seem to be notorious about - they can't get the titles straightened out. Seems like most people wait months for their titles. It's very annoying. Some have theorized that they play games with the titles for accounting purposes.

Are you trading in a vehicle? Are you allowed to drive your vehicle in the mean time while adding miles onto it? This is something I have wondered about the CPO experience as I would be trading in a vehicle.
I am trading in a vehicle. One document said there is a 500 mile limit on the trade-in quote and another document said there is a 1000 mile limit on the quote. I'm lucky because we are flying over the holidays and the car will sit for two weeks, and we also live in NYC so we put very little miles on the car anyway unless we do a road trip.

I think your concern is a real one and I will email the advisor and ask if there is any wiggle room when car delivery dates are delayed. I'll let you know what he says.

UPDATE December 19, 2018 4:16pm

All the paperwork is received and the bill of sale was sent to me via email. That's the good news. Bad news is no one from Tesla told me it was finished. I just happened to check my Tesla account and all the information was there. I owed a little over $100, and paid that right from my account. I then contacted the delivery and sales specialist and they emailed me the bill of sale.

I guess the moral here is that you have to be proactive. Tesla has to be slammed with people trying to make purchases before the end of the year. All in all, a week isn't bad for this part of the process.

Now comes pick up/delivery?.....

I'll keep you posted.

I just placed my deposit on a 2012 model S 85 Friday. Trading in my car that is only a year into its lease. So far so good but they have been slow to put trade info into my account to verify and accept their offer for my car. Also waiting until end of this week for car to get from storage to delivery center. Tried to get purchase sales agreement so I can send that to my bank for the loan for the model S and going on 3 days now. Also had delivery specialist tell me I would need a cashiers check for difference and don’t see why when they told me the final price I will need to cover balance of car and difference what is added from difference on trade in

Everything showed up in my account little by little. I had to email documents AND upload them on my Tesla account. You should do the same. And yeah, I couldn't do anything until I got the purchase agreement. Be kind and persistent. I don't know why they wouldn't let you pay any difference online.

UPDATE December 19th

Tesla called. Delivery appointment December 20th. Wasn't expecting that. Delivery specialist thanked me for being patient and I thanked him for all his hard work.

Next comes the inspection. I've looked through the forum for inspection suggestions but any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'll keep you updated....

Glad your process is going fairly smooth...
You're right about the pics you get from them...I was lucky enough to have a Manheim condition report for mine which came in at a 4.3
As far as inspection....do the basics...open and close all doors (check that all handles auto present when approaching) ...trunk and frunk... up down all windows and sunroof...wipers...lights... they will walk you through the basics on the screen....
Congrats...

I ordered my CPO Dec. 8 and still don't have a delivery date. The car is in California and I'm in Texas. The pictures were sent fast and I'm ok with the damage considering it was 33.4k. Pictures in the dropbox link...

Questions, has anyone had any success getting a loaner while they wait? The rep I spoke to today I needed to pay the remaining balance in mytesla account, but I don't see any balance in there. I've already sent financing to telsa, but I guess I still owe them tilting, ect? I'd love to have this car before Christmas, but things aren't looking too good.

Weird cuz I was told by multiple reps that I need to pickup my cpo within 7 days of deposit....no offer to ship the car....while others have had cpo's delivered to the nearest SC....
Doubt it on the loaner tho....
