Documenting CPO in Tennessee - new MS owner

Hi all,
I have read a few nightmare threads on the CPO process. I didn't see them until AFTER I pulled the trigger and deposited on a 2013 P85. I would like to document my CPO experience here for all to see, and also pray that it goes better than what I have been reading about. For one TMC member I saw that they delivered a car that was completely in unacceptable condition inside, and for others I saw delivery of scratched and dented cars and tesla refused to recondition those panels. It has me worrying I should have gone with a new 70D instead...

With a CPO 2013 P85 at around $60k, a new 70D is only $9.5k more -7.5k tax incentives... but then AP costs another 5k and to get a sunroof is another +2k. So I guess it's a question of whether the much increased speed and acceleration is worth it to me. I think it is; I was originally going to get an S85 CPO for much cheaper but didn't like the 0-60 time of the 70D I test drove. The almost 4sec time of the P85 should hopefully do it for me and be more satisfying than paying 5k+ more for a new car with AP that is slower. Does this make sense?? (Or am I a sucker for buying a P85 CPO?)

As for the process, it has been great so far. I have been talking with both a CSR and DS going over all the steps. The CSR changed my deposit to a P85 for me almost fully loaded (no SAS) at a good price. He has been good at finding various MS's with better deals than the CPO site has. Has been trying hard to accommodate what all I wanted. I eventually just splurged when this model with great options showed up. The DS got in touch quickly and told me 3-6 weeks after the request is made for transport to Nashville. Just last week she emailed me to let me know that the transfer order had been made. It's been about one week since then, so I assume the car is not yet in Nashville. I will check in again early next week.

Both CSR and DS are good at keeping up with email. Lately they have been tag teaming with the answers, so there is some communication between them behind the scenes, and they CC each other on some of the emails. My deposit switch was done over the phone. I called and left a message and the CSR called me an hour later; he went over all the inventory he could find with the specific features and price range I wanted then and there and I made the decision to switch to a car he had previously shswn me.

My only complaints so far are that they cant show me the range, and i dont k ow what state the battery is in, how much degredation has occured. I asked the DS and she promised to send pics of the car all around plus the fully charged range when it arrives. Heres hoping it still has 95%+! I hope this good responsiveness from the reps continues. I will update this thread for anyone interested.
Cheers!

Oh and I forgot to mention, they came up with a reasonable estimate on my trade in. No low balling. It's not official yet as I need to trigger that process after the estimated delivery of the MS is given (the trade offer will only be good for 500 miles and 180 of those are driving to the SC), but the estimate was in line with what I thought it would be worth.

Hey!

I'm the dude who opened the "my CPO process has been awful" thread, you've probably read it :D My experience with them had been very bad until I got the car, which was in pretty much perfect condition.

To sum it up, my biggest complaints were:

1. They literally raised the price on me in the middle of me putting down the deposit. This didn't happen to you, so nothing to worry about.
2. Very bad communication initially with the CPO advisor, and then the DS. This doesn't seem to be the case with you, so nothing to worry about.
3. Delivered at week 8 (I think) after an initial estimate of 4-6 weeks. To be fair, on the 8th week they gave me a loaner free of charge so that was great of them. This is something you should be 'concerned' about based on mine and other peoples' experiences and you should plan for a delay.

In addition, they gave me a free LTE upgrade (makes a HUGE difference imho) which costs around $550 for my troubles.

As for what car to get and whether you've made the right choice... obviously this is all based on what you personally value in a car, but for comparison's sake: I got a multi-coat red 2015 March S85D with Tech + AP1 for less than $60k. It had 36,000 miles on it (I don't care the slightest about miles) and is pretty option-stripped (I don't care much for most of Tesla's options) so it was the perfect car for me since it was 'cheap' and has the amazing acceleration of P85 plus AWD and Autopilot. I am extremely happy with my car.

From what you've been saying it sounds to me as if you value acceleration a lot. If 70D wasn't good enough for you, your only options are P85, 85D or higher. Staying at around $60k means it has to be P85 or 85D (the latter if you're lucky, since all 85Ds have AP, which increases the price a lot).

If you care about Autopilot (I would - it's awesome), it's possible but very rare to find a P85 or 85D with AP at $60k. You might have to wait for a long time before one shows up (I waited for more than a month) and even then if you have to stay at 60-62k, it won't have many options.

Yes! That was your thread and then there was another guy who started documenting his case alongside yours, and then the many replies piling on about Tesla's service... scared me a bit. But thanks for documenting the whole thing; it was a great read. I decided I am going to ask them to retrofit the LTE module when it gets to the SC, btw.

That tidbit about the 85D is an interesting one I didn't know. So they came later and thus all have AP? I also didn't realize the 85D acceleration was the same as the P85. Their site lists it at like 5.2 while the P is 4.2. So I hadn't really been considering them due to my impressions on the difference in perf. The 85D seems pretty rare, with only one CPO showing up on evcpo.com. it's a good deal to be sure at 71k and great options.

It sounds like the deal you got is pretty stellar. I'm paying similar for an older car (same miles) and no AP. So ostensibly the P should be higher value than D, but seems it may not be. Too bad I wasn't patient enough to wait it out for the perfect match, something about buying this car feels like an impulse buy. I'm not too worried about miles. New CPO warranty very much negates it.

About AP, I'm just not sure. From my POV the resale will drop without it. So it isn't important to me personally, but I slightly worry about not being a leader to sell if one day due to no one wanting a car without AP.

sorry for the monsoon of posts. just an update to say my advisor, or sales rep, called me this afternoon to let me know that 85Ds with AP1 are a bit in short supply and outside of the price range I as looking at (quoted me one or two in the mid-high 70s, and noted that one I found on evcpo for 71.5 was in HI...). So it looks like I have no reason to hem and haw about it; it's not really a choice between a P85 or an 85D with AP for me anyway since the latter is more than I'd like to pay right now.

Iqless, you got a heck of a deal. I think the key is waiting and being patient, which is very hard for me to do. That said, I am really getting a great deal in this P85, too!

I just accepted my 2013 Model S P85 last Tuesday and other than the lack of communication it really wasn't a nightmare.

I decided that the performance of the P85 and having a fully loaded vehicle (minus the jump seats) was worth it for me. At this point, the additional cost of autopilot and AWD pushes the price out of my budget (without making sacrifices). So I've been watching the inventory for the previous 3 months before I pulled the trigger.

Fortunately, I have a co-worker who owns a 70D with AP1 which I've driven at least half a dozen times. I've even taken other co-workers out for test drives when he is to busy to go. I'm very familiar with the capabilities of autopilot and the dual motor performance so I know exactly what I'm missing.

As far as your concerns, my car came with 253/265 range (95%) but I have yet to see if it's at full 100% capacity by balancing the batteries. I'll go through the process when I have time. Also, I never received pictures even though I was asked and promised. I understand that the cars can look pretty rough before reconditioning so I understand why they would resist or "forget" to send them... to me, no big deal.

The nice thing about CPO is getting your car and seeing all the options that they didn't list which are included. Mine came with full clear bra on the hood, bumper, mirrors, etc., premium interior lighting, performance pedals, chrome frunk trim, and a parcel shelf.

Today I went to a birthday party and gave 6 people the opportunity to drive a Tesla... doing my part to spread some Tesla joy.

Thanks for your input. Your car sounds very similar to mine. My reasoning was similar to yours. To get AP I'd either need to buy new or pump another 15k into a CPO; that started getting into frivolous spending territory. But to get a super performing car... that was more than possible. :D Likewise, the rep called me yesterday and said he believes mine should have parking sensors, and he's checking on it, which was a nice surprise. Did you get any swag on delivery? How about the condition of the car? Did you find any niggles that you think will bug you down the road, or did you come up with a due or "Tesla owes" list? And that is great to hear about the range; that is basically stock. What wheels do you have?

I did test drive a 70D with AP and thought to myself I would regret spending so much on a car and it not being much more fun than my previous one (a turbo-ed convertible rwd, pretty much a go kart), and so that spurred me to get a P.

No the car looks new other than one tiny paint chip that'd I'd have to remove the clear bra to fix. I don't really want to do that yet so it stays. I was expecting to argue a bunch about refinishing but even the leather seats are without creases or stains. The 21" wheels are mint (new?) and the tires are new...

So I'm working on some gripes but I don't have any yet.

I still have a model 3 on order so I can always get that with autopilot. My main goal with this car is to have a Tesla now. When full self driving is a reality I plan to reevaluate and decide what to do then; armed with the knowledge I gain from this.

Great plan. I think for me self driving might come with model Y

Ok my p85 is due into the CS tomorrow! After that the painful wait for refurb begins. I'm also waiting on a list of retrofits that the DS asked the service manager for. Right now I'm getting 3g->LTE for sure and will see what others are possible.

I also bought a CPO 2013 P85 and my experience was quite pleasant. I debated for a short while whether I should flip to a 2014 P85D but I couldn't justify the additional $23K to myself. I did lose the ability for the EV car tax incentive but I did get the tax incentive for installing the EVSE at home.

My car was in great condition, except for the little bugs that was running all through the crevices outside the car. That really freaked my wife out but Tesla vacuumed and put some sort of bug powder throughout the outside the car before I took it home. My car has SAS, Pano, UHFS, and 21" rims--all things that I was more than happy to get in a CPO.

It took a while for me to get pictures and the originating Tesla showroom didn't too much of an inspection (in my opinion). When it arrived to Florida, it needed (and had changed) brake pads, rims, tires, and the drive unit. The drive unit was the last surprise and that prevented me from getting the car on my birthday, but I got it two weeks later.

All in all, my specialist kept me informed and I've been an ambassador ever since. Oh and I did upgrade to LTE as well.

Great to hear about your experience and thanks for sharing. It sounds like you didn't mind the delay too much. I would not mind if they came and told me "hey we need to replace your DU and it's gonna be another week". After that, replace the battery and you have practically a brand new car! :D

Since you got the LTE, do you know what other options there are for retrofits? My DS hasn't got back to me yet on that, but she did say it would take a few days.

Well the 11th came and went. Not sure if the car made it there or not; still waiting on an update from DS.

Par for course. I'm sorry, but when it comes to timing, they make all sorts of promises, but failed to deliver on a lot of them. I'm the other guy who thread crapped on iqless's post. In retrospect I should've created my own.

Anyhow, I hope it works out for you. Just know that the longer they take the less likely that you'll get the amount promised on your trade in.

Darn. I hope that isn't some kind of strategy to make more money by offering less for the trade. Technically the same should be true of the car they're trying to sell me. It's aging while I'm waiting for it to be delivered :)

No contact again today. Will have to ping them and ask if the car has arrived. Last week I sent them an email and said I hope they are bringing it on a truck and not driving it the whole way... :)

I'll be honest. I don't think it's intentional on their part. But the fact of the matter is if it's out for bodywork/paint it's at a third party shop. And the quote they gave you for your trade in is only good for a certain period of time and a certain amount of mileage.

Hopefully they reach out to you soon.
