Drop-In Center Console now in the Tesla Model S online store

That's a little harsh. It does exist now and they are shipping them out pretty fast... at least as far as the black trimmed ones. And for the record the stitching matches on my car... Tesla redid their stitching at some point, so if you have an early vin (don't know the cut-off) it might be better to go with the CCI for that reason (if it really bothers you), but for anyone with a 20k plus vin (at least... again... not sure the real cut off), perhaps the CCI stitching doesn't now match with the change that Tesla made (I don't know, haven't seen one in person to really judge it fairly).

As for the outside being black only, given the design of the car has a middle cut-off point on the 2-tone look and the center console sits BELOW that cutoff point, from a design perspective it is technically more fitting that it comes in black. I guess that all depends on taste though... I am sure some people wish they had a dark brown leather option or some other crazy color, so in Franz we trust when it comes to the design of the car interior... if you want to buck against that design choice that is perfectly within your right (especially given the CCI option allows you to override that design decision), but if you want to have your car stick closer to their design intent, it should be in black.

It is just like how you shouldn't mix navy blue pants with a black suit coat... Can you? Yes... I mean noone is going to stop you... But *should* you?

Chickensevil, you get +1 for "In Franz We Trust". I agree with your comments on the black leather option, *until* you introduce the deck trim component. Because now if you have a tan or grey interior, this will be the only place where the deck trim is not surrounded by your leather color, and is instead on a background of black leather. That looks very "off" to me, and would actually have me considering piano black or carbon fiber for the deck, instead of the matching obeche wood.

Oh, and I don't consider it a major accomplishment that Tesla can ship a trickle of a single deck color option after two years of product design. I can see full well what they are capable of when I look at my car...and I can tell that they have put very little effort into this, or at the very least, they have shown very little results.

The current build of cars has white stitching.

I know we are multiple pages away from when I was posted, but I did provide pictures of both the console, my other panel stitching and even some screen grabs from the Tesla design studio where you can see the same whitish grey stitching... So given Morbot takes delivery in December a center console will perfectly match your car.

But the CCI likely won't remain in the same location after a collision or if you roll the car, and there would be no way to anticipate where it would go. It could end up in your face. I'm not willing to take that chance, hence why I am waiting for the Tesla console to be available in CF trim. I want a console that can be locked down securely.

Yup, not intending to call you out on this and don't want to start a debate on the subject. Simply supplying a less risk averse point of view as I have other heavy, sharp edged objects in my car that can fly around in a roll over including my phone, tablet, briefcase contents and other miscellaneous crud.

Center Console availability ?

I will get my 85D by the end of April and so far my local Tesla service center has not been able to confirm that my ordered carbon center console will be ready in time. Does anyone here have any additional information ? My delivery specialist even says that I "should not count" on the console being ready by end of April....

Cheers
Marc

Have ordered my center console when I got my Tesla delivered, that was in August 2013, since then still waiting. Have been on the waiting list of the US-Teslamotors Shop first, in the meantime the waiting-list seem to be transferred to a European list at Accessories-EU. Guess they will have to work through the list first. Hopefully I will still get the Lacewood, since this option is not available in the meantime anymore ...

Piano black was the only finish available but in August lat year Tesla stated that other finishes (I'm waiting on CF) would be available in "early 2015". Your post prompted me to drop a reply to Tesla asking them now we've reached early 2015.....

We"ll see.

Thanks Nigel, I was just wondering about this the other day. At this point, I may end up passing on it, but am curious wth is going on with it.

how are you even ordering one with trim other than piano black. I was lead to believe that they arent taking any orders other than black...no wait list or pre-purchasing program available, How did you get your CF ordered?

I am on the waiting list for the console in CF decor w/ dark stitching. Apparently they are adding some stitching variations because cars produced in mid 2013 and earlier had black stitching while those produced after received white or light grey stitching. The current consoles match newer vehicle stitching, but not mine. They told me I'm on the list for CF but no firm release date is available other than sometime this year. Which in Tesla time means 2018.

Nice prompt reply from Tesla:

We are currently estimating the console with your décor will be available in the spring, and then, we will begin working our way down the waitlist to fulfill orders. We will be able to provide better timing information as to when you can expect to receive the link to purchase the console after the consoles have been released. Now that we have finished fulfilling all Piano Black orders, you are approximately 310 on the waitlist.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank your for your continued patience

On the one hand I'm a bit leery as to what exactly "spring" means but on the other it sounds a little more definite than before. I ordered CF about a week after the original list opened up in October 2013.

Just looked back and for posterity I'll add the latest update to my list:

Tesla 11/29/2013 said:
When production has ramped up we expect to have consoles available to order for everyone on the wait list by January and February of next year.

Tesla 4/17/2014 said:
Unfortunately, there has been a hold on shipping and installing the consoles for the past several weeks. Tesla has identified additional parts that need to be fitted to the Premium Center Console to further improve the product.

Tesla 5/2/2014 said:
The updated estimate for resuming the shipping of the consoles is currently slated for early June.

Tesla 8/1/2014 said:
Center consoles in other décor finishes will be available in limited quantities starting early 2015.

Yes, I thought I would not want the center consol and actually did without for over a year. I had the piano black center consol installed in November and love it, the only problem is it came with white stitching and I have black so dyed the stitching. It will be worth the wait.

My thought's on this topic are that Tesla created the console a long time ago when the trim stock's were high and it was another viable product to sell, then being pressured to deliver all the Model S' in a timely manner I think maybe he didn't want to possibly stall production by not having enough trim for the inside's of the car....

Just my 2 cent's.

...You can keep those by the way, Canada doesn't use Pennies anymore.

It is able to be removed, but has to be done by Tesla and they will likely charge you for it. I assume once removed they would just put the carpeting back in the floor to cover up any holes. Just a guess.

I love mine far to much to ever consider having it removed to find out.

When I traded cars they removed the console from the one I traded and installed it free of charge in the new one. Took 20 minutes.

FWIW, the decor is only on the top part that flips open where the phone adapter sits. If you're planning on docking your phone or leaving that section open for any reason you'll never see the piano black or any other finish. That's why I didn't wait, even with the CF interior.

I am curious. How hard would it be to change out the flip part later when Matte Obeche Wood shows up? For example, would Tesla likely sell that cover door separately and be able to install it (for a fee obviously)?

I asked Tesla and they replied "Unfortunately, we will be unable to swap out or replace the flip-up deck for the Carbon Fiber piece when those consoles become available in 2015."
