If you lisen to the call after the Q1 report you will here that they are talking about that they have improved the energy to weight ratio by 30% by lowering the amount of Cobolt. With the information that exist about Model 3 battery I and several others have calculate that the energy to volume ratio is about the same in Model 3 as Model S and X. So the only advantage you get in energy storage by moving to 2170 cells is that they are 8% higher but that also means that you need to redesign the battery pack and maybe the hole skateboard. Now lowering the weight of the cars is of course good but it won’t give us 30% longer range. So, potential theory here:
The S has had a number of small tweaks recently, to help differentiate it from the 3.... and since Elon is so worried about where the top-end 3 fits in the S lineup, he's either gotta nerf the 3, or bump up the S.
So.....
the 18650 deal with Panasonic is due to run out (or did run out last January, and they've mutually agreed to extend). WHAT IF......Elon can have his cake, and we can eat it too? As in: the Model 3 PLRD comes in right at P100D numbers, but now....Panasonic and Tesla have agreed to start putting 2170 packs in the S and X starting on ____? The new pack architecture will allow for faster charging speeds (as evidenced by the 3's out there already), AND a new top-end pack size of 130kWh.
It would allow the 75D to likely be sunsetted, with the new pack sizes being 90-110-130. And it would make the P130D FAST.....or quick.....or both.......
Hey.....I'm just spitballing here while waiting for our announcement.
Is obviously STILL not the end of the week.

It could be that only employees get to configure AWD and performance this week and they just aren't posting.
Rolling vs Powered spinning are different.??
If a car is built properly the hubs will always spin.
The longer we have to wait... the faster I expect the car to be
How disappointing if after all this it’s just a mild bump in performance.
I would’ve said ‘we’ll find out soon enough,’ but I’m starting to doubt that part too. Holding out for 2.9... im prepared for disappointment.Tesla doesn't do mild
Oh you can get 2.9, just spend $50K/$70K or more. I want under 2.0 for under $20K but then reality sets in.I would’ve said ‘we’ll find out soon enough,’ but I’m starting to doubt that part too. Holding out for 2.9... im prepared for disappointment.
I would be more dissapointed if they don't update the website today.
I thought the key was to lower expectations to the point where you couldn't be disappointed...?
Anyone got a link to the 3 configuration page? I haven't been able to see it since the day I ordered my 3.
So ... in 2 weeks they’ll finally announce the performance version at 4.3 seconds... wah-wah.I thought the key was to lower expectations to the point where you couldn't be disappointed...?
Is obviously STILL not the end of the week.

If all Tesla did was to put another rear PM motor into nose, while adding 300lb to the curb weight, it would be capable of running <10.5 @ >125mph based on the HP and weight addition, assuming a 160lb driver. This assumes a Model 3LR weighs 4000lb now with a 160lb driver and can trap 103 mph. The battery should support it.
Why would they need an induction motor? The PM motor they have is already too powerful to use for an AWD Performance variant, unless they want to stop the sales of the P100D.
It will be interesting to see how they handle this. The Model 3LR is not the performance model, but it does have the performance motor necessary in place.
Elon’s week has 45 days in it. It’s how he is able to accomplish so much.
Cost perhaps and a small induction motor size. The PM motor is maxed for performance.
Dont be naiveI would be more dissapointed if they don't update the website today.
