But this info that Elon posted, even if wildly wrong, made no difference to anything.

Well, it'd mark at least the 3rd fundamentally untrue claim he made about his own company in the last couple of days..... the click through rate, the technical reasons for slow performance of the service, and (least importantly to most but still something he shouldn't have been that wildly off on) the cost per meal of employee food.


Which suggests he's either wildly misinformed on how everything there works, or just shooting from the hip without taking the time to actually find out the details of any of this stuff.


Neither is a great look


I 100% agree the employee should be fired for speaking out in public as a first move (If he'd tried internal channels, knew Elon was informed of the accurate info, and then Elon was STILL posting misinformation that'd be a different story).

But the fact Elon keeps getting basic stuff wrong about the thing he's trying to fix certainly does :make a difference to anything"


It's possible even someone as smart as Elon reached a knowledge/task saturation point.... he's got to know and understand 5000 things about Tesla, and another 5000 about SpaceX, and however many about Boring, Neuralink, etc.... having to now learn a ton MORE things about twitter, and keep all of em clearly understood, may be causing what we're seeing here.

It's a downside to the flat management structure Elon prefers- he has to know a LOT about a LOT. It's fantastically useful until you hit that saturation point, and to me these are signs he perhaps has.
 

Most responses (by far) are pointing out how petty Elon is for firing a guy for telling the truth. Again , free speech for me but not for thee. And don’t BS with this you can’t correct your boss when he is wrong. Most bosses want the correct answer. Elon now has a habit of punishing speech he does not like. The guy he fired was a recognized good guy too(San Diego’ citizen of the year). Luckily he will probably have a new job lined up by tomorrow.

The thing is, he is focusing on the important stuff first, which is the key to success. Very compute intensive:

Elon's the jerk? You don't call out your boss for possibly incorrect info on Twitter. In any organization that is a big no-no. If Elon posted critically incorrect info, then you get the word to him privately through internal channels.

But this info that Elon posted, even if wildly wrong, made no difference to anything. Which makes the programmer's post even worse. You can only interpret it as an employee who doesn't like their boss and wanted to make his boss look bad.

Firing him was the right thing to do.

And yeah, maybe the guy's a typical Asperger's engineer who doesn't know how to act properly. So what? He will learn from this mistake of his and be better next time.
You think that was a mistake? I think either Elon was trolling (as he has been known to do) or to Mr. Frohnhoefer was disappointed that he didn't get a severance package already and wanted to accelerate the process. He probably figured he'd call out Elon publicly because Elon went public with a claim Mr. Frohnhoefer knew to be BS instead of using internal messaging to ask the engineers if it was true before saying it publicly (hmm...not verifying stuff before tweeting it, that DOES kinda sound like something Elon would do!) and if the response wasn't favorable, he doesn't want to continue working there anyway. And if Elon wasn't trolling, he may have fired one of the guys who best knows how to fix the problem.

yup. that's what the fanboys can't answer... either twitter is brilliant/ complex and an incredible product = $44b worth ... OR ... a totally bloated company run by slackers and a handful of SpaceX engineers could build a better product in just weeks.... in which case you'd be out of your mind to pay $44b for when you could develop it in house for well under $100m

You are assuming that low level employees are correct, and the CEO who is being fed information from more seniors engineers and accountants is wrong.

In the cost per meal example, he was rebuked by a person in charge of food services for the SF office. Not exactly a high level position. In her tweet, she guestimated that staff were at the office a certain % of time. Elon rebutted that claim by quoting actual numbers from the badge reading data. She talked about meals costing $20 each, Elon rebutted the claim by posting the total yearly budget from the accounting system.

I know a lot of people here all of a sudden think that Elon just goes with his gut on all decisions, but the guy actually bases his decisions on data. More so than previous Twitter CEOs. In the Lucid thread, we were comparing the early days of Lucid (now) versus early ramp of Model S (2011-2012). Unlike Lucid, Tesla back then was run with POSITIVE gross margins ... while they were starting a manufacturing ramp. Lucid has huge negative gross margins in comparison. Elon is actually a great CEO, and I am shocked (or not, I guess) that people have forgotten how hard it was to do all the things that Elon has accomplished. So, somehow this brilliant CEO that pulled off two impossible companies (Tesla and SpaceX) is all of a sudden an idiot when running Twitter?

The click rate claim was debunked by multiple high level external sources, so that defense doesn't really work there. And it wasn't a little wrong, it was hilarious-order-of-magnitude wrong.

The guy fired on the android thing WAS a senior engineer, not low level.

He has been working professionally as a software engineer for roughly 18 years, and as an Android software engineer specifically for 10 years, previously at Raytheon, and then at Twitter for over 8 years.

He gave cogent, detailed, reasons Elon was wrong about this. Firing him for calling Elon out in public as wrong? 100% the correct move. But it doesn't make Elon not wrong on the tech part.

I'll avoid getting into the...food fight :)

As I said, Elon got his info from several senior engineers. Versus one guy who doesn't like Elon. You believe who you want to believe...

Edit - and it isn't even clear the fired engineer even understood what Elon was talking about. Elon said RPCs, whereas the engineer was talking about client server calls from the user browser to the Twitter servers. It is possible that Elon was talking about RPCs solely on the back end. ie. once a request comes in, the back end might be doing 1,200 RPCs to different back end servers, something the front end engineer wouldn't know about.

Yep, we are starting to see Elon’s effect on the company. Another amazing success story in the making.

Brazilian CPAC guy and replying to someone who said "election fraud was mathematically proven" in Brazil.
This is relevant because Elon is working on giving a Brazilian to the Twitter front and back end.

He is hardcore laser-focused on the Twitter user experience and this came up in his research.
 
Oh wonderful. Today Elon is chatting it up with a Brazilian CPAC guy and replying to someone who said "election fraud was mathematically proven" in Brazil. For such a moderate this guy really loves the right wing hardliners.
Be fair. Elon Musk's reply to the Tweets were "It’s on my list to review. How urgent is this?" and then when somebody else Tweeted mathematically proven he asked "How was it proven?".

Very true. However his replies bring with it a lot of eyeballs. His replies almost always point those eyeballs in one direction.
