Throwing excrement is not actually an ideological thing, even if one specific group tends to be the ones doing it :)
Couple of years down the road, I can see Elon shrugging his shoulders and tweeting “free speech enablement is a more complex problem than I had thought”.

Then he will show us the next shiny thing he thinks he can master.

"I'm announcing Twitter-Town-Square Beta 1.87 still riddled with racism, hatred, lies, slander, and of course a side helping of child porn. We're working on an AI to filter it all while at the same time somehow let people say absolutely whatever they want - especially those who's political views I agree with. I predict we'll have that nailed in another 6 months. Really, this time"

All that was already on Twitter under the former management and it was all okay as long as you rolled with “the current thing”.

Having guidelines is fine and dandy as long as you have equal enforcement and aren’t trying to manufacture consensus.

Nah, it’s over. Elon’s goose is cooked. Definitely Twitter will continue to take this to trial though! We’ll see if we get there. They are in the “show me the money” phase.
Love to get another disagree on this just now. Lol. Was correct, of course. Bizarre. They finally got their money though!

All is well that ends well.

No, that's what's on 4chan, the current haven of free-speech-absolutism. Twitter has been trying (imperfectly) to actually police up the lies, the hate speech, porn, etc and Elon is here to STOP all that and make Twitter into the utopia that is 4chan which he believes will be this great moderate well behaved town square for civil discourse because somehow having rules of conduct causes extremism and badness while letting everyone say whatever they want creates a fabulous forum for kind centrists

Another aspect of that- Certain persons convinced this equates to "They delete more from one side than the other" might want to consider if that is because that side simply posts more of things like lies and hate speech.

FWIW I do see one actual difference, that may or may not prove meaningful--- 4chan is a message board primarily...This has a few key differences from twitter which is primarily individuals either directly saying stuff on their own "feed" or replying to what someone else said on theirs.... if you are interested in a topic, but mute specific people because you dislike what they say, on a message board, you can often have the entire convo disrupted because by design it's long-form interaction among a bunch of people having a discussion... where as it MIGHT be possible to allow individuals on a platform like twitter to filter their feeds to exclude content they don't want without being near as disruptive to their overall use of the platform.

I don't know how well that'd work in practice on a wide scale, nor the real impact it'd have on the platform.... but it's the ONE difference I can see that Elon might be doing his "Well, first principles suggest this should work better...." thinking on..... essentially let individuals censor what THEY don't want to see versus letting some random 3rd party make that call.

I do still expect he thinks AI will take care of most "outright illegal" content, as well as provide much better filtering controlled by each user than the current "block this person" one..... but that thinking might also be...optimistic.

It's been mostly a disaster on YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok, where people constantly get false strikes against them and then have to fight to get them reviewed by a human and removed.

The left wing TWTR experiment failed. Maybe the only way an open social media platform works is to shut down both far left and far right equally. Maybe it'll be a return of equality. An equality that works for society as a whole and not every knuckle head that wants an extreme identity platform tail to wag the dog.

Looking forward to Elon coming out and saying that 30% (or whatever) of accounts are bots and that this proves him right. Give it a week.

He’ll be near insufferable for a while I suspect. More so than normal.
In the meanwhile, The salt that’s flowing is delicioso.

All anyone wanted was equal enforcement of rules and for Twitter to stop colluding with the White House and various Intelligence Agencies to silence inconvenient truths. If it takes Elon buying Twitter to see that happen then it was worth it.
