Apple, Spurned by Others, Signs Deal With Volkswagen for Driverless Cars.

Quotes:

In recent years, Apple sought partnerships with the luxury carmakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz to develop an all-electric self-driving vehicle, according to five people familiar with the negotiations who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. But on-again, off-again talks with those companies have ended after each rebuffed Apple’s requirements to hand over control of the data and design, some of the people said.

Instead, Apple has signed a deal with Volkswagen to turn some of the carmaker’s new T6 Transporter vans into Apple’s self-driving shuttles for employees — a project that is behind schedule and consuming nearly all of the Apple car team’s attention, said three people familiar with the project.

[...]

BMW was long Apple’s top choice, given its focus on high-end but mainstream products, former employees said. Many Apple executives, including the company’s chief executive, Timothy D. Cook, also drive BMWs. Mr. Cook visited BMW as early as 2014 to discuss a partnership, and those on-and-off negotiations continued for years. But a person close to the talks said any deal now appeared dead because both Apple and BMW wanted to own the customer experience and relationship.

Apple’s other favored choice was Mercedes-Benz, internally code-named Bruce, according to one former employee. The two companies held partnership talks for more than a year, said three people familiar with the discussions. But those negotiations were halted because of similar disagreements over control of the experience and data, said one person close to the talks.

[...]

The frame, wheels and chassis of the T6 vans will remain, but Apple is replacing many components, including the dashboard and seats, said two people familiar with the project. Apple is also adding other computers, sensors and a large electric car battery, they said. The shuttles will ferry employees between two of Apple’s Silicon Valley campuses, and will include a driver behind the wheel to take control if needed, as well as an operator in the passenger’s seat tracking the van’s performance.

Executives leading Apple’s car project had told Mr. Cook that the shuttle would be completed by the end of 2018, but that deadline will be missed, one former employee said. It is unclear whether Apple’s partnership with Volkswagen will extend beyond the shuttle.

Can't quote the whole thing here, but it's an interesting article.

Oh, you mean like the inconvenience of having to stop at a gas station every week to fill up, while juggling around work and family?

You’re just making excuses. Anyone who wants to make it work - can.

Are we so blind to the problems bothering the common men now?

I used to live in a town called downers Grove, il. It's a middle class suburban town close to Chicago. Till today not many apartments there have charging for ev. Say you live in one of those places. The closest charging station is one mile away. The closest gas station is 2 Miles away. A trip to the gas station is about 6min driving and 2min fill up, in sort of the worst case scenario. To charge an ev though, you really need to plan for it. Either you wait there for hours or you walk back home which take about 40minutes round trip. And while charging you don't have a car to drive, you can't pickup your kids from daycare.

The ability to charge the car while you sleep or work makes a huge difference. Many people in this country don't have that. And they have to make time for charging. Those are real problems, not execuses.

Sure if you really want to make it work, you can. But for most people car is a means of transportation. It should serve their needs, not the other way around.

I don't have to make excuses for myself. I am a first day line waiter and now a Model 3 owner. But that doesn't mean we have to be blind to the real problem out there.

Tesla battery plan gets green light as Gupta reveals major power play

Cool article about the SA government embracing batteries. No need to fact check this one Elon, its all Tesla love.
Also, there is some talk about building a EV factory, but Im not understanding exactly who will build these cars. Can anyone verify if its Tesla or someone else.

Edit: there is mention of a purchase of 50,000 powerpacks. It’s unclear wether the government is paying for these

They should honestly buy a big stake in tesla and call it a day. The synergy in working with another valley company over the someone from the other side of the pond is obvious.

I think eventually as more EVs are out there, the demand will make condo owners put chargers in. in California, a lot of people charge at work or during their drive, so lack of condo charging will not completely preventing people from buying EVs. And once people bought EVs, the condos that have charging infrastructure will have a better chance to attract those renters. Other little things, such as when people realize that EV's are quieter, will prefer to have neighbors who have EV instead of loud ICE cars.

Also utilities could see the need to get ahead of EV charging infrastructure, both to make a buck, and also proactively control the charging drain on their grid, such as PG&E's effort in Northern California.

Yeah. Eventually. In the mean time, there's pain to go through in the transition. I'd like some rule that says the condo board has no reason to refuse installation of an EV charger. So that I don't have to go through a condo board approval process. Willing to pay for everything myself, but the bureaucracy is deep in Pothead's Republic of Canukstan

Y'all need a law like this, from the Pothead's Republic of California*

Civil Code section 4745(a) Any covenant, restriction, or condition contained in any deed, contract, security instrument, or other instrument affecting the transfer or sale of any interest in a common interest development, and any provision of a governing document, as defined in Section 4150, that either effectively prohibits or unreasonably restricts the installation or use of an electric vehicle charging station in an owner’s designated parking space, including, but not limited to, a deeded parking space, a parking space in an owner’s exclusive use common area, or a parking space that is specifically designated for use by a particular owner, or is in conflict with the provisions of this section is void and unenforceable.

Civil Code § 4745 – Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

*Note: lots of fine print excluded.

Yep. Make this law default everywhere.

The State Government will provide monies for 1100 low income public housing households to get solar/battery energy storage. These people get the hardware for free but pay a much reduced rate for the electricity. These payments plus arbitrage profits from the virtual powerplant fund a second phase and so on and so on until 50k low income public housing households get solar/battery energy storage.

The second program is for the middle class. It is a means tested rebate of $2500 for battery energy storage. Upto 40k credits are available.

More unbiased new. This time the wall Street Journal.

Electric cars are no solution to climate change, but having buyers believe they are, and having investors believe that government, media and green groups will treat them as if they are, is a key prop under Tesla’s stock.

Sorry only have the Apple News link for new
