What are the prevailing theories on the larger fender camera modules?
1. Heaters?
2. Spray cleaners?
3. Bigger cameras?
4. Radar or other new sensors?
5. Placeholders so the wider fender plaid is at the same width?
6. Fenders are already wider. Cameras have to stick out to see around them.
7. Fashion statement?
8. Something else?

The Model S has wider fender flares than the previous S, so that is my guess as to why they are beefier.

Likely to get better view angles in the image and also deal with the wider rear fender flares of variants.

My guess is they beefed them up in anticipation of removing the side mirrors in the (near?) future.

It would be great if they could get rid of the mirrors. Probably only outside the US at first. The DOT holds back manufacturers from providing features that occur often in EU and other locale speced vehicles.

It looks like the circular part of the wheel is a separate piece so that a yoke conversion would be basically removing the ring and attaching a half-ring.
