I have the headlights on “auto” and the wipers on “auto” but many times the headlights do not come on. I would think if it is raining and the headlights and wipers on auto shouldn’t the lights automatically come on?

The Tesla windshield wipers will activate automatically if it is raining. Per page 59 of the Model Y Owner's Manual, the headlights will turn on.
NOTE: When you operate the wipers, the headlights automatically turn on (if they were not on already.)

Model Y - According to Tesla service tech TODAY - the new firmware has taken out the auto headlights on when the wipers go on. Check on your display - no green lights showing up; and if you get out of the car - no headlights on. Since headlights on is a law in most states when wipers are on - this seems like a very stupid change. This is NEW - mine came on until recently and I just noticed it. There was NOTHING in the release notes about it????
New info - have been with Tesla for several hours!! This is nuts and I wonder how many of us never knew the lights were not coming on when the wipers are on when both are on auto. IN fact, you have to manually turn your lights on ANYTiME the wipers are on unless it is dark!!

It states that headlights will no longer come on automatically with the wipers. This is an expected change and is actually aimed to increase regulatory compliance across all platforms and regions. Some state laws require low beams to be turned on while using windshield wipers. However, the responsibility to take this action is on the driver, not the vehicle manufacturer.
The Auto setting on the lights will still have them come on when the sensors sense it is dark enough but no longer just because the wipers are on unless it is dark as well as raining. I apologize I was not able to find this sooner.
I hope this helps to clear it up as I see it is no longer listed in the owners manual as a feature either.
I think this is a major safety issue that should be addressed with Tesla. I am really disappointed. Other cars have this feature WHY DID TESLA TAKE IT AWAY??????
NOPE see the info from TESLA. Since we all have had this work in previous vehicles and had no idea it wasn't happening in our Tesla - this is a major safety concern. THEY TOOK IT AWAY- WHY??

NOT anymore - see info from Tesla: They used to turn on, but now they have to be turned on manually if you want lights on when the wipers are on either auto or manual.

Nope they only come on when it is dark - NOT when it rains according to Tesla

They took the ability of the lights to automatically come on when the wipers go on (whether the wipers are in auto or manual mode). You have to manually turn the lights on when your wipers go on (either in auto or manual mode) to comply with most laws for headlights to be on when wipers are on. In the past, and in most other cars, low beam headlights and tail lights go on automatically when wipers are on. I am trying to find out WHY Tesla would take this feature AWAY in the firmware when it is such a safety issue and a law in most states.

MN requires you have the headlights on in 'inclement weather.' A general interpretation of this is if it's raining enough to use the wipers then it's enough to use the headlights, so I would love to have the headlights come on automatically. After driving in the rain yesterday I can verify that I had to turn the headlights on manually, though. A nice compromise would be to have a user-selectable option under the headlight settings to turn them on with the wipers.
That's what Tesla told me, but in doing more research - 18 states have law requiring headlights on with wipers; FL has a windshield law requiring the same; 14 other states have laws requiring it during "adverse conditions" which are less specific. I totally agree with you - a user-selectable option would be VERY HELPFUL, especially for us in places like FL with multiple showers per day during the summer. Thanks for your comments.

Just noticed this yesterday while driving in the rain. Drove about 600 miles yesterday and today, most of it in the rain, and it’s definitely a pain to have to manually turn on the lights each time you start out. That’s assuming that you remember that you now need to turn them on manually. And then the car bugs you to turn them off when you park and exit the car! This definitely needs to be a setting in one of the menus.
Also it would have been nice to have been informed of this change. When I first noticed it I assumed that it just wasn’t working correctly, or possibly that the most recent update made it an option. Wasted some time re-booting and searching through the menus for a non-existent setting.

To be fair, it's exactly like every other car on the road but I agree it's really frustrating to go from 'better than everyone else' to 'just like everyone else.' The least they could do was put an option to turn the feature on manually.
Not like every other vehicle on the road; my previous vehicle, the 2017 Chevrolet Volt, had manual windshield wipers and the headlights would come on in the daytime whenever the wipers had cycled more than 10 times. So even on a low intermittent setting the headlights would turn on after a few minutes.
Been checking with friends with Teslas and so far everyone thought the lights came on automatically and were quite surprised to find out that they don't. Agree with all of you that we at least need an option to turn this feature back on.
