Interesting Facts About Teslas Charging Standard

Tesla has nothing to lose by releasing this, and shooting their shot. Because at this point in NA, everyone is moving to CCS and Tesla will need to spend millions to update their adapters in the US (if they truly want to open their network), and carry two standards at their stations.

It’s kind of like Apple letting non-iPhones use Lightning. No other mfg cares cause they’re already on USB-C.

Yeah but USB-C is (mostly) technically superior to Lightning (higher data rate, more reliable, although slightly larger). CCS is inferior in size and maximum power transfer. The only advantage to CCS is you don't need to switch the power pins between AC and DC so it's slightly easier to design for.

It's probably too late to switch to Tesla's connector, but it sure would be great if it happens.

Not nearly the same.

Most EVs in the US are Teslas by a large margin. Most public chargers in the US are Superchargers. Every Lightning adaptor plugs into a USB port so by it’s very nature Lightning will always be less ubiquitous. Add in connectivity to printers and other devices which use USB and it isn’t even close.

Other phone makers have tens of millions of phones supporting USB. There are only a few 10s of thousands of CCS equipped cars.
