Maybe they Model 3 owner should have gotten more creative, offer to pay for the service but then ask for a referral code which could earn them a % off the referral purchases from their advertising. Who knows, maybe they could pay for the entire Model 3 our of that if that advertising is really that effective. Refer a 1000 people for $1,000+ job and get your Model 3 paid off! No freebees for unspecified deliverables.

^ This is the way to do it. I would not expect a $1,000 referral fee on a car detailing job, but maybe one or two percent of the ticket on new customers who give the referral code.

As far as asking for freebies, there's nothing wrong with asking, but there's also nothing wrong with telling a beggar to ***k off. Complaining because you got a rude reply when you asked for something for free is childish and stupid. And FWIW, when media companies solicit advertising business (which is essentially what the blogger was doing) they show solid data concerning their reach and effectiveness. If you want a hotel in Dublin to pay you for advertising (whether in cash or in a free room) you need to show that by advertising with you they'd increase their business. A hotel that's always full does not need to advertise. And a blog or newspaper that's not read by people who travel to Dublin would be a useless place to advertise.
