Wife just got a her Black Beauty S60 w/19"s and wanted the 21"s.
As a practical matter, I do way more driving and longer trips. We thought we'd get more bang for the buck with the 19s on the S85 and the 21s on hers. (At least on the calendar).

Incidentally, we got 12650miles out of the 21s (continentals) and got new ones when we switched wheels. The 21s got rotated once and I had Dania align once. Backs to front. The last 6000 miles drove me nuts as the back tires were cupped, so lots of noise when we put Em on the front.

We're got swap Em every 4000 this go around and see if we do better! :)

Here's a question....From when I took delivery in February, I consistently got about 370 Wh/mi on the highway when averaged on long distances. I installed 4.5 last week and then took a 200 mile trip and then a 600 mile trip. Over both of these I got 335 Wh/mi. My driving style didn't change nor did the load I put on the car. Has anyone else seen better highway mileage under the 4.5 update?

^^^ This. Warmer weather always uses less power. A few reasons are: air is less dense, there is less heat required, cooling doesn't have the same power hit as heating, the lubricants in the drive train become thinner, and the tires are more flexible in warmer weather.

While all of those things contribute, my understanding is that the main reason for worse performance at cold temperature is that the battery operates much less efficiently at cold temperatures than it does at higher temperatures because of higher internal resistance. This link says the decrease in capacity is linear with temperature and is something like a factor of 2 going from 80 deg F to 0 deg F:

Discharging at High and Low Temperatures Battery University

Somewhere earlier in this thread Zythryn had a graph based on his own measurements of wh/mile that was linear in temp (deg F) and showed wh/mile increasing by 2 wh for every one degree decrease in temperature.

I'm not an expert in battery chemistry though, so someone who is may wish to chime in...

Correct, but capacity reduction isn't the same thing as efficiency reduction, which was what I was referring to. There is a capacity reduction and presumably a maximum power reduction as well because maximum power relates to capacity.

Happy to join as entrant #100, and I will round it out with a nice capture when I hit 1000 miles driven:

jive_devil
60 kWh
CA
19" wheels
1000 miles
308 Wh/mi
307.8 kWh Total Energy spent

More recently, however, my average is about 282 Wh/mi though now that I'm into the "normal" commute routine.

Here'e my summertime update:

2500 miles
300 Wh/mi
746 kWH Total Energy spent.

I drive about 70-30 highway/streets and almost always with the AC on.

As opposed to the winter cold, the summer heat has been taking a toll even here in NorCal. Heavy A/C use, particularly after the car's parked out in the sun, is chipping away at my 60's range. All things being equal (driving style, terrain, etc.), that's been a big factor of late in making my lifetime average creep up in the past few weeks from 319 to 321 Wh/mile at 8,300 miles now. I've found it hard to keep it under 340 Wh/mile on any given day of late.

In case it's of interest, daily stats for P85+ Loaner (with Michelin tires). The "SINCE LAST CHARGE" is my stats for the day. Given that the vehicle started with a range charge, it seems there was quite a bit of vampire during the day. If we use 320 Wh/mi. as the rated consumption, then that maps to 10.56 kW above reserve. Combining with the day's reported consumption yields 70.36 kWh. That's quite a bit less than 85 kWh, even if you leave some room for the reserve.

Sorry, I failed to report 19" wheels, 85kwh battery.

Currently, 278-279 wh/m at about 7200 miles.

Using air conditioner about half the time; many morning trips where cooling is not needed. I estimate the cost of cooling to be about 20wh/m.

Drove over 3000 miles in June! Over 100 miles per day. 3-4 longish trips, but mostly a lot a hell of local driving and running around of kids. My lifetime avg. Wh/mi continues to fall (in just 2 months it went from 340 Wh/mi to 320. And averaging just under 300Wh/mi for the month without really trying ain't too shabby. At right at 7 months and a bit over 12,500 miles my car goes to St.Louis for it's first service appt. on Tuesday.
