MCU2 upgrade duration and problems

I don't know how long it actually takes since I did it at the same time as other service that was held up waiting on a part but there were zero problems afterwards and it actually fixed a couple of annoying issues. This is a great upgrade and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

I had mine done in, I want to say, 2020? Was finished in a day but I came back the next afternoon to pick up.

Absolutely no regrets on the upgrade. It felt like a brand new car again due to the improvement in responsiveness. Lost all my old user data but that only hurt the numbers-nerd part of me.

The only negatives I can think of is that some of the USB media related changes between MCU1 and MCU2 were something I had hoped to avoid. I used to keep one of two USB sticks with music plugged in all the time, but on MCU2 that media source would not be active after the car had slept, requiring a full remount and re-scan which took precious seconds away from my standard "I'm running late" commute.

The "solution," which had been implemented when they broke random playback, was just to use Slacker/Tidal/etc 100% of the time instead.

For those who upgraded to MCU2, how long did it take the SC to complete the job? Have you encountered any problems since upgrading?
My MCU2 upgrade was done on April 24, 2023 while-I-waited at the service center. It took approximately 4 hours. My appointment was at 8 am and I was back on the road by Noon. I haven't had any problems since installation. I have a 2014 Model S 60, pre-auto pilot.

Since this is the most recent MCU2 thread to be posted to, I thought I'd ask here if anyone knows if there will be a MCU3? I understand my 2016 has an 8 year old computer in it, but paying $2250 to upgrade it to a 6 year old computer makes me wonder if they will let us upgrade to something newer.

There's already been an MCU3 that's been shipping in new cars for quite some time. It's an AMD Ryzen based computer as opposed to the Intel Atom on the MCU2 and Nvidia in the MCU1. Tesla says they have no plans to offer an upgrade to the 3.

I had my 2014 P85 D upgraded on 13 June 24.
Dropped it off before they opened and they were not finished downloading at the end of the day.
So, I asked for a loaner and they gave me a 21 Model Y.
I liked the Y and was blown away by how much faster the Y charges at the Super charger than my S!
After i picked up my S the first thing I noticed was when I went to put an address in the NAV all I I had available to use was Letters! There were no numbers, space bar etc??
I tried the old reboot and everything came back like it should.
I remember somebody saying you don’t need to get the radio upgrade because you can just download tune in and get all kinds of radio stations they said and so on. What he didn’t say is it’s over $12 a month to get tune in. I used TuneIn on the Y and really liked it, so I went to download TuneIn and all I get is a circle that spins, it’s not downloading. The next problem I found when I went to use the microphone button to pull up a song I liked which I had no problem with in the old system , all I get is something saying there’s an error in the system. Try again. so these are the problems I’ve found so far. When I spoke to Tesla, they just said to bring it in for another service appointment. So, we’ll see what happens when I do.

I was quoted (yesterday) $2000 without the tuner. Claimed if we didn't have EAP, it would only be $1500.
It’s not about having EAP. It’s cheaper for cars before HW 2.0. This wording also implies that the $1500 would apply to someone who already got the FSD computer. It certainly didn’t used to be that way.

“This upgrade is available for $2,000 plus applicable tax, including installation, for vehicles equipped with Autopilot Computer 2.0 or 2.5 and for $1,500 plus applicable tax, including installation, for all other vehicles.”

Ah yes, that makes sense. The tech asked it it had FSD and I said 'only EAP', which prompted his response.
