Model 3 Timeline (speculation)

As I noted in another thread I currently expect the Model 3 to be delayed until at least 2018 (or even until 2019-2020 for global volume deliveries if there are additional delays between now and 2017).

Some Model X delays will likely carry over, not even a very big car company does everything in parallel (some engineers and other key personnel working on both cars).

The conservative safe bet for the 3 is it will be shown "Spring" 2016. Everything Tesla does is late, so assume May 2016 (or even summer 2016). They say late 2017 release, but if the S and X are any indication it will begin shipping in limited numbers fall 2018, and then ship in volume early 2019.

While everyone wants a model 3, I think most everyone agrees more time to perfect it is better then rushing and blowing it. As this industry is still young, a bad release can cause some serious long term damage to the whole EV movement. Especially with this car that has so much riding on it.

Design

They are currently at the clay model stage - Tim Urban visited the Tesla Studio and saw the Model 3 clay model - see quote below.

http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/05/elon-m...ddest-man.html
"I had a chance to visit the Tesla design studio (no pictures allowed), where there were designers sketching car designs on computer screens and, on the other side of the room, full-size car models made of clay. An actual-size clay version of the upcoming Model 3 was surrounded by specialists sculpting it with tiny instruments and blades, shaving off fractions of a millimeter to examine the way light bounced off the curves. There was also a 3D printer that could quickly “print” out a shoe-sized 3D model of a sketched Tesla design so a designer could actually hold their design and look at it from different angles. Deliciously futuristic."

Delicious and i3 should not be used together in the same sentence !!! LOL

This couldn't be anymore true. I'm praying that the Model 3 doesn't even remotely resemble the i3 or the Nissan Leaf for that matter (some of the ugliest cars in existence..)

My guess is the Model 3 really will be similar to just a scaled down Model S. (Or perhaps it'll look like that sweet crossover concept released by that third party website. Think it was in French.)

Just throwing out some more timeline guesswork:

March 9th 2016 Elon tweets that the launch event will be March 30th 2016 at the Design & Engineering Studio in Hawthorne. (it is important to get it all done in Q1 so that they can say they did it in Q1 during the May 4th 2016 Q1 results announcement)

March 10th 2016 onwards... invites will go out to select attendees - who gets an invite will of course be determined by Tesla's secret, doesn't-always-make-sense formula!

- During the waiting period, we shouldn't be surprised if there are various leaks of the car, either by Tesla or by others.

March 30th 2016 Launch Event. Attendees should bring their checkbooks! They will be the first people to be able to reserve a Model 3... they'll be at the front of the line.

March 31st 2016 at mid-day PST - Initial Reservations for Model 3 will open (globally) with a "Tesla preferred customers" phase, lasting one week. The website will allow MyTesla account owners who already own one or more Model S or X to place a reservation for one Model 3 to their accounts. I project there will be 150,000 Tesla cars on the road by this time and some subset of this will form the beginning of the line. How many? Up for debate, perhaps half? The reason Tesla will restrict the first reservations to this group is not elitism or even to "thank" current owners for supporting the company during their initial growth years. It will be simply because current owners of Tesla cars know how to drive electric cars and are not total newbies to the experience. They will not drive the car in the wrong way, they will know how to appreciate the various aspects of the car, they know where superchargers are and know how to plan trips, and know how the UI and systems work and how to interpret the signs and indications given by new cars during the initial break-in period. This will take a lot of "easily solvable" customer problems out of the equation - leaving only new, genuine customer problems to solve.

April 7th 2016 at mid-day PST - Unrestricted Reservations will open, globally.

- Expect a non-specific tweet or report from Elon/Tesla regarding the quantity of reservations prior to May 8th ER.

May 4th 2016 ER Tesla will reveal in a fairly specific way, the number of reservations, as well as the status of battery pack manufacturing at the Gigafactory #1 - Model S and Model X packs will be in production.

June 2017 Gigafactory #1 manufacturing for Model 3 battery packs will be operational, though not full-tilt yet (that won't be for a couple more years)

July 2017 Design Studio will open up for Model 3.

September 27th 2017 Delivery Ceremony at the Fremont factory

I understand the desire to give current Model S owners first crack at the 3, but I hope newcomers won't be completely shut-out from the early order process.
Yes. If for the only reason to get more people off gas powered cars...like me! Waiting for M3, would suck to have to drive the gas car longer because Model S/X owners got priority.
