Super excited. Just took delivery of a new X75D (#67XXX) white exterior with black vegan. No PUP/EAP/7Seater.
This is our first Tesla. We took delivery at the new Fremont delivery facility. Got there around 9:45am. Everyone I talked to was very nice. From all the posts I read from this forum, I was under the impression that we could take as long as we want (within reason) to inspect the car before we drive out. The initial DS lady that showed us to the car was somewhat hasty in briefing us on some general setup for 15 minutes or so. Then my wife and I moved on to inspection on the car itself. During this whole time, I remember the DS lady mentioned at least 2-3 times that we have 10-15minutes to look over the car before driving out, because they need to prepare for other new delivery. I totally understand that there is a queue but we have spent a huge sum of money, so we believe we have the right to inspect before taking delivery. Don't get me wrong. She was very polite and carried a smile. The other DS's were very awesome, attentive, and patient as well.
Question to all: How long did you (fellow Tesla owner) inspect your new car before driving off? Two other families who came in around the same time took less than a hour before they leave. I am sure if they find what we found (see below), they will be back very soon.
As for ourinspection, we came in with a somewhat low expectation after reading over the checklist. So we pretty much looked at every inch of the car. I was quite delighted overall the car looks pretty good. There were some slight panel gaps but honestly nothing major. The paint job looks pretty good with one minor flaw below the clear coat. No swirls or scratches. Looking back to my previous car purchases, I think we just never looked as closely as this time when buying a Tesla. However, we did find some interesting things.
Interesting finds:
1)
FWDs not line up: Noticed the two FWDs are not entirely "aligned". What I meant is when you are on one side of the car looking along the weather strip on the roof that sits between the FWDs and the back hatch, you will notice the weather strips along the two FWD do not "line" up, which indicate the FWDs probably do not sit "shoulder-to-shoudler" if that makes sense. In other words, one FWD maybe sitting a few millimeter behind the other FWD. This may not be a problem, because this offset may still be well within the spec tolerance. Since the car passed water test, it means there should not be any leakage issue. I will keep an eye on this one, since I don't know FWDs well enough.
2)
Missing seat belt latch in one of the two seats in the 3rd row. This is a BIG one. This is the latch that snaps into the buckle. So yeah... without it, you can not buckle up. Not to mention the same seat belt is twisted. This could not be fix on the same day, so I need to take the car back in a week after the part comes in. Sounds like Tesla may need to remove the entire seat to fix it, since the seat belt is part of the seat assembly.
3)
Found a mallet: After the morning inspection, the only thing Tesla needed to do was some cleaning up of some sticky adhesive found sparsely around the car's edges, grooves, trims, etc. Since Tesla needed a hour or so for this work, we went out for lunch. My wife and I were hoping for a smooth process post-lunch. When we were doing one final check, we found a MALLET below the bottom tray in the trunk footwell. lol.... Yes, a MALLET! We found it because my wife was inspecting the trunk footwell, and found the bottom of this area not flat. So I dug deeper and pulled out the entire bottom tray, thinking the bottom tray was just not install properly due to tight fitting. Little did we know, there was a mallet below the tray. Given the tray was a tight fit already and then there was a mallet below it, the tray could not sit flush to the bottom, hence, it was not sitting flat. The DSs and us had a good laugh about it. Maybe Thor visited my car.
Overall:
Love the car. Satisfy with the DSs mostly. Hope Tesla can do a better job in QC before delivery in the future. This will make the DS's job much easier, and also speed up the delivery process. (Imagine the delivery number skyrocketing with M3.) We ended up spending a bit over 2 hours in the morning and then another hour after lunch just for picking up.
Afterward, we drove the car straight to OCDetailing for some good old Xpel wrapping.
Hope others find this interesting or useful.
