Model X Timeline - From Prototype to Production

We received the configuration email on Monday, and configured it yesterday. It appears you get a week to think about your choice because the reply email says the order will be confirmed in one week. It's hard to say where we sit. We went for a sig reservation thinking it would move us to the front of the list, not realizing we had to get every conceivable option available with the corresponding price tag. So we gave up the sig and were told we would be put in line based on when we placed the reservation. Our RN is 441xxx. We placed our reservation on 3-27-14 (funny, I had no idea it had been that long!)

I suspect production will follow the S ramp up. Performance models first , then 90s and 70s last. We went with the 90. All it is says on the design page is deliveries will BEGIN early 2016 for the P90D, BEGIN mid 2106 for the 90D and BEGIN mid to late 2016 for the 70D.

I will update my posted when we get confirmation, but I'm thinking that is a good 5 months away.

Just a note, our local service center has 6 Xs all getting prepped for delivery, and we saw one in the wild over the last two days (northern NJ.)

There are 6 Xs in Paramus?

funny, the delivery specialists in Denver told me last week in person that cars arrive here at a secret location for prep for delivery and are only brought to the shop at the time of delivery to prevent gawking. Asked if a secured X orderer could see another x being prepped for delivery and was shot down. "You wouldn't want someone gawking and fingering your car before you, would you sir?" was the snotty response I got. I would not mind anyone from looking, admiring, gawking at my car before I took delivery. We're not talking about test driving the beast or getting into the car. Strange the differences between attitudes.

It's not that secret of a location.

The car drives like a dream, but the Tesla communication was a nightmare. Here is my Model X Delivery info. / experience. I live in Marin County, CA just north of San Francisco. I was #491 on the signature list. I received delivery of my vehicle on 12/31/15. I was at wits end because the delivery specialist I had been working with was not a very good liar, which is a desirable trait for someone in Tesla communication as their main job is to keep you in the dark about when you will get the car. I was upset that the rebate for CA was likely to expire before I received my vehicle, so I was calling about once a week to check on the status of my vehicle. Why should I have to pay an additional $2,500 because Tesla missed yet another goal (in this case delivery of all the signature cars by year end)?

The ONLY thing that saved my opinion of Tesla was a superior delivery specialist (not the one originally assigned to me), named Taylor Berenyi. He is an absolute HERO and maybe the only person at Tesla Corporate who has their act together. This man went above and beyond to make certain I had my car by 12/31/15. I am convinced, however, that the following are major factors for quick delivery: I paid cash: no financing, no trade-in, no lease. CASH money. If you are lower on the list than I am and have not gotten your car, this could be a factor. My signature car: the silver color (I was completely amazed that they couldn't come up with a distinct new color for such an amazing new car, but given the 2.5 year delay I experienced, I simply took the best of the options for me). The signature comes "fully-loaded". The only options that you have to pay for were the cold weather package (all seats and steering wheel heated) for $1,000 (completely worth it by the way) and the $10,000 ludicrous speed (not worth it in my opinion because the car is already fast as lightning). I did not get the ludicrous speed.

I despise the secrecy of this whole process...Tesla must think consumers are simple-minded sheep easily led to desperately desire something they know almost nothing about and willing to do almost anything to get it. I believe that transparency is the key to a good business, but this is not their method. I have been showing the car to anyone is interested and when they ask me if I like it I tell them the truth about what it took for me to get it 2.5 years after my $40,000 deposit. I LOVE the car...it is amazing and HATE the process of dealing with Tesla Corporate. The caveat is that the service center and the stores have all been great, but how sad is it that the first time any of the sales people even saw the inside of one was when I took mine to them so they could have a look...they were so nice to me, it was the least I could do! I'm happy to answer any questions...transparency, nice, isn't it?

I don't know what Taylor did to make your experience better, but I have the feeling that most of the delivery specialists are being kept in the dark with regards to customer information. The reason is probably due to unforeseen issues with individual vehicles and Tesla is trying to keep things secret until the SC can manually QC the vehicle prior to delivery.

Therefore, no matter how good Taylor is, he can't do anything without support from manufacturing and the service center. They're the ones that are pulling the long hours. I expect that once the quality of the Model-X improves off the assembly line, things will become more predictable and customer's won't be kept in the dark as much.

Tesla must think consumers are simple-minded sheep.

I'm guessing that comment is more about the frustration than truly considering us poor little mindless lambs.

It seems like a repeat of the S launch, which was very challenging, even into the 2nd qtr of 2013. Buying from Tesla during a ramp up is a little like childbirth, you are so overjoyed with the outcome that you forget the pain getting there. My only advise to Tesla would be to fix this before the Model 3 roll out. We S and X early adopters are used to waiting, so in the long run does it really matter whether it's 24 or 26 month wait? We waited a year for the S, it will be well over two years for the X. But without a doubt, worth the wait both times.

the engagement lock on the falcon door wasn't properly engaging, the door wouldn't shut completely. I have been impressed by the service aspect. they sent a specialist out to try to fix it at my house, they sent over a model s loaner and came and took my X away.

How much value do the VINs really heave in terms of the order (assume we are talking apple to apples cars)?

I'm in the low 300s for a P90D and have heard that people with VINS in the 400s got called that they are in production and people in the 200s are scheduling delivery. I haven't heard ANYTHING from my DS in terms of the car even getting on the assembly line. I dont want to bug her BUT I am getting a little antsy. Seems like I am over 1 month behind someone within 100 VINs of me but also seems like people behind me are much closer than I am (unless they are lying).

P90D all black everything, no luda but everything else. VIN #3Xx

You didn't have to rush. Those income limitations won't be finalized until mid-March at the earliest. Anyone in CA taking delivery of a Tesla in February can still apply for and receive the $2,500 rebate from CARB.
