Model Y Concealed Radar

Haven’t seen much info on concealed radar detectors (remote mount) on the forum so I figured I’d post
Installed an Escort Passport 8500ci today. Will take some more pics of where I mounted/Wired everything when I open it back up to inspect. Really wanted a Max 360ci, but for $100 on eBay, I had to give it a try. Will give some feedback on how well it performs

just a question - isn't radar detectors a bit useless?
In cases when it detects the radar, you already been beamed, no?
If they are shooting laser, then yes, you've been had. That's why some people also put in laser jammers.

But for K band or Ka band radar frequencies, a good radar detector can pick those up a good distance out to give you time to adjust your speed down.

A lot of people will run a radar detector and use Waze and that covers mostly everything. But even with those, you're not 100% invincible. You still need to have situational awareness.

I have a video I'm not sure I should post.. I was doing a "dragy" 1/4 mile run on a highway in my S4 which trapped ~125mph. Towards the end of the run, my Escort Max 360 went off. I braked around 120mph, with the detector still blaring. I came around the bend ahead, State Trooper on my side and by that point I had slowed to the 70mph speed limit. Continued my trip home after, and the guy never pulled out.

They do work...very well. I have one in each vehicle, and they have saved my ass tons of times (even when just doing to typical 10mph over they are super helpful).

Agreed. We have them in all of ours. We have used over the years; V1, Escort Passport Max 1 and Max 2, Uniden R3 and had a full integrated radar/laser system in another car.

Folks that do not understand radar usually say they don't work. However as mentioned above most LEO radar is left "on". When left on a radar detector can pick it up for miles well before he even has sight of you. He doesn't even have to be using it on another car. This allows you to pick it up and get down to the speed limit. I found this and Waze together are the best.

As mentioned above I did experient (a costly one) with a full integrated system to include laser jammers. In 3 years time and about 20K I needed the laser jammer a total of ZERO times and that was in SoCal as well as road trips throughout the entire Southwestern US states. I just don't think laser is that prevalent.

We will be transferring the RD into the new MYP when it comes in and have been following this thread to find the "switched" wire.

I usually just use this to mount the RD.

The big thing for me, while having my radar detector on, is being more spatially aware of my surroundings. Radar detectors do not work magic, but my dumba** has dumba** tendencies, and I know this. I’ve been a fan of the Escort line for quite a few years now, and can say that it has saved me more than a handful of times, and has saved me from potential tickets with their added costs of attorney fees, etc.. Well worth the “investment” imo,…that is…unless you’re one to sit in the far right lane going 59 miles in a 60 mph zone (no judgement there) :p

Really depends on where you are and how local LEOs are equipped. If they're using Laser/LIDAR, the radar detector is basically just going to tell you that they just got your speed. If they're using POP/burst radar, you might get lucky and pick up scatter from them measuring other cars. But unlikely to give you enough time to slow down if you're the only target. Radar detectors will pick up traditional always-on guns just fine, though.

I been using a Valentine V1 and has saved me from many many tickets, when the cops are scoping cars if you learn to read your radar you will spot an officer shooting radar since radar travels like light its spreads open like a funnel over distance and you can be aware. Laser in the other hand, does not taper open and its more direct, laser pin points, radar cannot be pin pointed on far distance.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.
I can’t count how many times I’ve had the detector go off with a Ka band (usually a traffic cop)

I’m usually in autopilot or cruise control, set at the speed limit and use the detector as piece of mind.
I can’t count how many times I’ve had it go off, only for me to notice I’m going 10-15 over and slow down just in time; these cars are just too dang smooth!

Escort Max Ci 360 professionally installed. Display recessed in air vent directly in road line of sight - essentially creating a second speedometer since it pulls current mph from GPS along with current speed limit. Control buttons are discreetly mounted to the side of the center console about where my hand normally rests for muting/adding a location to GPS memory.

Wow, super clean install.

Now that is what I call a sleek install! Really got me itching to upgrade now lol

How much was the full set up with install?

Ka band is primarily used where I live in Central California. Different parts of the country use different types of radar and laser, and you can look up online what your local police use (I should emphasize that this list is what they primarily use, not all inclusive, and not always up to date, but you get a general idea.)

I have a Valentine 1 gen 2 radar detector that gives me miles of warning on the freeway. I literally have a minute to slow down before I see the hiway patrol car if they have their radar on continuous mode. I can say that my $500 radar detector has paid for itself several times over and is far from useless. That said, if your local hiway patrol use laser, then you are pretty much outta luck and a radar detector would be useless in this case.

Might be cheaper to pay for the occasional ticket :) :) :) with some money left over to pay for a lawyer as well. In Michigan on Freeways MSP(Mi State Police) uses laser mostly. I use to have an escort and it was rather useless on freeway...other than scaring the crap out of me with the nasty "LASER" sound at which point its too late.

I think most cities around Atlanta switched over to laser as well. It used to be state patrol, but now I think it's all patrol vehicles. I gave up on the conventional radar detector because of this....
