Model Y - UK deliveries

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
If you click through a referral link, the Model Y now shows as “custom order” on the referral page for UK customers.
However this pings back to main Tesla landing page.
This is a recent change and worth noting that the Model Y isn’t currently supported in the referral T&Cs.

So potentially 2 changes:
  • Support for Model Y in referral program
  • UK custom order open soon for Model Y

(Speculation!)

Not just shipping. 10% import duty on cars from US. Tesla will be keen to supply ALL 3 and Y EU cars from Germany as soon as possible.
I know we will not be in the EU by then but assuming parity for now. It is quite possible that we will have to wait for GF4.
On the other hand we/Ireland are the only significant RHD market in Europe so will Tesla choose to make all the RHD vehicles in one location initially? Germany is not the best place to ship to Australia and Japan etc so it could be that We get supply from the US but the rest of europe is supplied from Germany.

This is a great point. Would it not make more sense to make RHD cars in China; closer to Japan, OZ/NZ...? In this case; might we get model Y mid-next year? Shanghai should be producing LHD model Y by the end of this year...?

May 2021 update - I contacted Tesla UK for an update on the Model Y, and they were very tight-lipped (said ETA in the UK not available). Giga Berlin was due to come online on 1 July 2021, but has been delayed 6 months (Elon approved) due to planning/environmental/EU red-tape. Meaning that Giga Berlin won't be online until at least Q1 2022, which is when reservations for the Model Y in the UK are likely to open...⏳

Our only hope (in the meantime) is that Giga Shanghai starts producing the RHD Model Y for the Australian/UK markets (they are already supplying the new 2021 Model 3 RHD to the UK). With demand in China being so high for the Model Y, the RHD cars are likely to be last in line for manufacture (as usual). 😢

Without a miracle, the Model Y is a good year away from arriving in the UK (earliest Q2 2022).

UK Model Y are definitely coming only from Berlin. Berlin likely to be delayed at least to Q2 2022.
Perhaps first RHD roll off in Q1 2023.
Model3 and Model Y will look extremely dated by then and as we know Tesla are slow with Model upgrades. By 2023 the UK non Tesla charging infrastructure will have changed out of all recognition by then.
Tesla have lost the plot as far as UK is concerned.

What is your source for "definitely"? Shanghai is set up now for RHD markets.

This is incorrect. Battery production in Berlin is Q2 22, not delayed in a sense that it was always expected around 18 months from Battery day. Car production will start in ~ 3 months.
