Maybe October but more likely ~November is when they’ll switch over, historically speaking. If this is important to you for whatever reason then you need to wait until confirmed VINs start showing up before you place your order.
California Ys generally come from Fremont unless you want the base model AWD which is only produced in Austin.
Not necessarily. I live in So Cal and my MY LR white color came from Austin. What it seemed to be back in March 2023 was that if you ordered a MY LR base (white color at the time) free color then the MY LR was coming from Austin. However if you opted to customize the color (Gray, Blue, Red, Black) then the MY LR was coming from Fremont.
Nowadays the base free color is Gray so I don't know if that is still the case that the base color MY LR with no change color is still from Austin factor.
I think that the 10th position of the VIN being the model year applies to all Tesla vehicles, but I have not verified that. The R=2024 is based on the fact that 2023 Teslas have P in the 10th position and the assumption that Q is being skipped, as was I and O. Perhaps someone with actual knowledge can chime in.
Total newbie here, I've never bought or owned a Tesla before. Like the original question in this thread, I'd like to buy a 2024 model Y, but I'd like to have Hardware Level 4 (HW4), which I understand is starting to appear on some 2024s. What's the process to order this vehicle? I'm in Massachusetts.

All North American Model Ys currently produced come with HW4.
For what it's worth, my new X definitely has HW4 and that should include FSD 2. I haven't tried FSD out yet. I want to get more used to driving the car myself first. However, cruise control works great. Lane keeping works pretty well, though it does tend to wander a bit from left to right while still staying in its own lane. It's not as smooth as an experienced human driver.
As I mentioned in another post, when pulling into my garage, the car tells me to stop 2 to 3 feet before the wall. Supposedly, HW4 includes a newer and better radar than the one used before. It probably needs calibration, though I don't know how to do that.

HW4 on the MY is only meaningful in conjunction with FSD.....maybe
so if you intend to buy FSD, then perhaps you're justified waiting for HW4
if you are not going to buy FSD, it doesn't matter whether you have HW3 or 4.

Sometimes you will order a certain configuration, and Tesla will find an exact match out or stock or in transit. Other times you will need to wait till it comes down the line.
In addition, Tesla has a policy of continous improvement. You will never know in advance, for certain, that any specific configuration will come with your order.
Best way, if you absolutely must have next years Model date, is to tell your delivery specialist that you are willing to wait for that configuration to be available before matching.

When you get your VIN #; Digit 10 is either P = 2023 or R = 2024. Digit 11 is the Plant. A = Austin, F = Freemont or B = Berlin. My ordered Y is a 2023 build from Austin (god help me....I get a good build).
