He also confirmed that the higher-than-1050 VIN numbers we're seeing are due to scrapped units. Sometimes they would only discover that the units were flawed after they reached a point on the line where they had a VIN assigned.

This would be a good explanation, except that the production series marketing vin# start with car 1201. So either the S vin series cars go past 1200 thus overlapping with the P series run, OR the scrapped vin's were reassigned.

If they are in different series, then it doesn't matter in the slightest if they overlap - it's still a different VIN.

Yes, but if Tesla knew they were going to overlap, why not start the production series with P000001 instead of P001201?
